Odin + CF-Root's rooted kernel

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthr ... ?t=1103399
This rooted kernel is for the "rooting beginners" and those who want to keep as close to stock as possible. CF-Root takes the kernel from an original Samsung firmware, and just adds root, busybox, and ClockWorkMod (CWM4/5) recovery
Re: Samsung Galaxy S2
that's all you need really, some of the heavily modified roms, always end up having functionality issues, or flat out ignore functionality.... Cyanogenmod is the most popular heavily modified rom, but it does away with a few things i couldn't part with.
Re: Samsung Galaxy S2
Does it matter what firmware you're using? I'm on 4.0.3 with the LP8 release.U4EA wrote:Odin + CF-Root's rooted kernel

Re: Samsung Galaxy S2
I don't think it does, but I always prefer to match my existing version just in case. I'd stick with LP8 if it's in that thread.

Someone told me SuperOneClick was the way to go, which was indeed so easy to use even i was able to figure it out.Captain Mazda wrote:That's my next move so I can get Titanium. Did you use Odin?
When i have a spare moment i need to further investigate this ROM business, seems like there's a lot of customizing i can do now but fuck me, it's all rather complex. I got this root app called Rom Manager and it seems it's capable of doing amazing things that would normally take 9 other apps, but i haven't dared click on anything yet because i literally do not understand any option it gives me

On a sidenote, my battery life seems to have improved drastically since i rooted

I did my Xoom from Honeycomb to ICS. Once you get through the tech garbage on XDA it's easy and the USB cable was pulled out half way thought and that didn't brick it so i don't think you have to worry much about damage.Ryoki wrote:

If it's a phone you have to be sure you're getting the right ROM for all the GSM stuff but as I remember it there's 6 steps
- allow developer USB on device
- Get USB drivers
- Get the correct ROM for device (worth looking around as some ROMs have better software/apps than others when packaged)
- Using the android SDK, gets hazy here, do something with permissions maybe root
- copy/paste a few commands found on XDA to start the copy over the new ROM
- restart and update
Done.
Re: Samsung Galaxy S2
Hmm, not following most of that
I'll read up on it tonight maybe.

Re: Samsung Galaxy S2
Did some reading and some fiddling this weekend, but unfortunately i still don't understand a goddamned thing about installing new ROM's. I have the free version of ROM Manager which seems to be the correct thing to use, but when i downloaded a random one for my phone it told me i should flash it, then gives me no option to flash. On the interweb people keep referring to something called clockworkmod, but then i read somewhere else that ROM Manager already has this. Only i can't find it in the app. Gawd, it's driving me nuts...
Should i pay for the full version because i read somewhere it has the option to install ROM's the easy way or should i just admit i'm in way over my head? Probably the latter eh, i have no idea what the fuck i'm doing. And i'm getting increasingly nervous about bricking the thing every time i mess around and click on something so techinical it might as well be in another language - just to see what it does. Weird thing is that i can't stop messing around, ROM Manager is by far the sexiest app i've ever seen. I realise this mysterious beast holds many secrets, if only i could comprehend it a bit more.
Phone is still working though

Re: Samsung Galaxy S2
Why do you want a new rom in the first place? Stock SGS2 is functional, and only slightly dull. I would experiment with alternate launchers [e.g. Nova or Apex] and themes before messing around with roms if I was you.
Re: Samsung Galaxy S2
...err, i was under the impression that i needed a newfangled ROM thingie to get the themes to work?
Customizing is exactly what i want to do, but none of the stuff i try in ROM Manager seems to work (boot animations, fonts, etc). They install, i get the message everything was a succes, and then nothing happens... what gives?

Oh, i'm on version 2.3.3, Gingerbread... does that have anything to do with anything?

Re: Samsung Galaxy S2
I'm surprised no one's mentioned Tasker yet (http://tasker.dinglisch.net/tour.html)
Although it doesn't require root it lets you customize and script damn near anything you could imagine.
I use it to change various settings and run tasks based on my location. i.e. Password protect my phone when I'm not home or at specified friend's houses. Auto-silence when at work. etc.
I've also replaced many other apps by creating my own widgets.
