All over this like the proverbial fly, as Dungeon Master and Chaos Strikes Back are still two of my favourite games ever.
If you want to see what all the fuss is about, they can be downloaded for free from here.

Legendary graphics. The thing I most disliked about Eye of the Beholder, though, was the grid-based movement, I wanted it to be smooth like Doom. I essentially wanted something like :q3: with the level design (puzzles, etc.) and graphics of Eye of the Beholder. Legend of Grimrock has the graphics, but I don't think I want to go back to that grid-based gameplay.

Hired Guns deserves a mention, but not without saying that the difficulty of it was terribly hard. So hard was the demo which was the first level of the full game, that I almost didn't want to get it. I did complete it but it was more hard work than fun. Got a copy of the full game but then didn't want to complete the first level again, as far as I remember. Maybe I did it but then my party was too weak for the second level.

Oh, only now I realize it's Grimrock not Grimlock. I thought it stupid to name your fantasy game after a transformer.

Criticising Grimrock for not being more like a first-person shooter is like criticising Fallout for being turn-based and not real-time.
They're different styles, and one is not the evolution of the other; both have an equal right to exist.
Or, to put it bluntly, no-one gives a fuck what you want DTS, this is made to fit a very particular and popular niche that has been under-serviced for an incredibly long time.

I still need to finish this game. Having a little trouble with some timed pressure plates puzzle. Been pretty fun though.

this game was awesome. the ending was pretty weak though, I wouldve done it differently.

also, no 1 char challenge mode

There actually is a one character challenge mode MKJ. You have to take some bones you find in a secret to a resurrection crystal, which resurrects that Toorum bloke and unlocks him as a single character party with a unique character class.

Edit:
While I loved Grimrock, being an old school Dungeon Master player, I found the rigid class system annoying and the magic system unfulfilling. Those two systems in Dungeon Master have aged incredibly well and still haven't really been beaten. In regards to the class system, I suppose Divinity or the Elder Scrolls games come closest, but they still feel clumsy when compared to Dungeon Master's "Learn By Doing" system, and Arx Fatalis had a magic system that came close to being as good as the one in Dungeon Master, but was just a little too fiddly while not having quite as much depth.

Now if someone were to remake Dungeon Master and Chaos Strikes Back in the Grimrock Engine, I'd be all over that :)

oh yes I know about the Toorum thing, unlocked if the first run.
but back in the DM days it was awesome to challenge yourself with a limited set of skills and HP. this Toorum guy is pretty much Uber.

in LoG, I found that in each combination one of the PCs would be overhead. I played with a Fighter, 2 Mages and a Rogue and in each fight there was at least one PC not contributing a lot thanks to limiting factors.

editor coming soon with Lua script support so DM remake is only a matter of time :)

Bought this during the Steam summer sale, and just started playing it. I am freakin HOOKED.

If any of you enjoyed these old school type RPG's, I would highly recommend this one.

I disagree, point is that the characters are not there for their amusement. A sense of dread and despair is conveyed in part via the monotous enviroments. By that I don't mean bland, btw.

but, Grimrock 2 brings the party outside:
