I don't know who you're responding to, I don't see anybody getting emotional. If you were to copy the essence of what makes you into another form, it's obviously an independent life form from that point on. You can't exist in two places.

What if you are on your death bed and the option is available to you? Technically it may not be you, but it would make all the same decisions and choices as you, and live on forever. At that point, why not? You can think of it as a totally sweet memorial.

There's nothing emotional about this, it's a purely academic discussion. I (and I'm sure GFY) aren't saying that we wouldn't want this done - as in DooMer's scenario, I'm totally for that, sign me up. It's just that many people don't understand that "you" would in fact be dead, but your legacy will live on as an immortal digital copy of one's self. It's one thing to be okay with copying one's self, it's another to understand the implications of what the process entails.

Sure i get you.... But think about the process of going to sleep and waking up. It's kind of surreal if you think about it, and nothing really guarantees that thing that woke up is the same thing that went to sleep. It will kinda feel as disconnected as that kind of experience . I guess my issue is that I identify myself with what's in my head, and the rest is just 'there' Who is to say your real you isn't your thoughts and memories, instead of that fleshy thing you abuse on a daily basis. In that sense, I still think that the copy will be as much the real 'you' as your current body 'you' is. Meh, I feel like I'm repeating myself without progressing my explanation closer to how I perceive oneself.
