Just remember folks, I called this. immortality.
Re: Just remember folks, I called this. immortality.
you guys are having an emotional response to all this, and overlook rationalization. You are a mixture of memories arranged in a unique gray matter pattern and chemical levels. Deal with it. As long as those things are quantified I don't see the issue. And as GKY already mentioned, none of us are really who we where 10 to 15 years ago.
Re: Just remember folks, I called this. immortality.
I don't know who you're responding to, I don't see anybody getting emotional. If you were to copy the essence of what makes you into another form, it's obviously an independent life form from that point on. You can't exist in two places.Tsakali wrote:you guys are having an emotional response to all this, and overlook rationalization. Doomer wasn't really meant for you. Just seems that peeps get hung up on that 'original you' business. Which will eventually be a laughable matter in the next 100 years or so.

Yeah but what if your copy becomes a douchebag and ruins your good name? I don't know about you, but I don't a Wikipedia page about how my doppleganger decided it was a good idea to kill and eat live kittens in a globally televised event. At least I'm guessing it'll be globally televised once kitten eating becomes an Olympic sport.DooMer wrote:What if you are on your death bed and the option is available to you? Technically it may not be you, but it would make all the same decisions and choices as you, and live on forever. At that point, why not? You can think of it as a totally sweet memorial.
Re: Just remember folks, I called this. immortality.
There's nothing emotional about this, it's a purely academic discussion. I (and I'm sure GFY) aren't saying that we wouldn't want this done - as in DooMer's scenario, I'm totally for that, sign me up. It's just that many people don't understand that "you" would in fact be dead, but your legacy will live on as an immortal digital copy of one's self. It's one thing to be okay with copying one's self, it's another to understand the implications of what the process entails.

DooMer's already a kitten eating douchebag so your point is moot.

Sure i get you.... But think about the process of going to sleep and waking up. It's kind of surreal if you think about it, and nothing really guarantees that thing that woke up is the same thing that went to sleep. It will kinda feel as disconnected as that kind of experience . I guess my issue is that I identify myself with what's in my head, and the rest is just 'there' Who is to say your real you isn't your thoughts and memories, instead of that fleshy thing you abuse on a daily basis. In that sense, I still think that the copy will be as much the real 'you' as your current body 'you' is. Meh, I feel like I'm repeating myself without progressing my explanation closer to how I perceive oneself.

I'll take ten copies of me for azure
it is about time!
Re: Just remember folks, I called this. immortality.
Oh come on. People have been predicting this for years now. You're hardly being Nostradamus on this. Same with most of your 'predictions'. Try something a little less broadly popular. It's like predicting a hurricane or school shooting. It will eventually happen and you can say 'see, I predicted that'.Κracus wrote:http://www.cbc.ca/news/yourcommunity/2012/07/human-immortality-could-be-possible-by-2045-say-russian-scientists.html
A possibility by 2045.
This place is like a catalogue of various predictions by me.

lol at moron comment on bottom of page:

logic.Even if you could become immortal by any means you would be subject to the laws of average. In time, your chances of some life event (such as being hit by lightning) would increase with each year lived, until at such time (in the future) there would be a 100% chance of a life event ending you. There is a chance of living a lot longer, but you would be by no means immortal. (indefinite)
And that is why no one can live forever.

it's actually not a bad argument, ignoring the reality of a 'backup copy' existing.

Yes, but since we're imagining here... And I don't buy the "100% chance of a life event ending you" scenario.
This all reminds me of the Justin Timberlake movie "In Time" and various novels (Machine Stops)...
And some other movie, Repo men or something or other...
It's inevitable.

SENS have been researching eternal youth for years
trouble with debates like this is: people start talking at cross-purposes, confusing persistent youthfulness with immortality. young people die all the time (some of them in my basement), but the point of persistent youthfulness is avoiding all the life-ending conditions that come with aging, not to live forever
also, giant tortoises
(also also, spot the mistake in that story regarding the tortoise's minimum age

Would be wild to have a turtle that outlived you and then it had to be passed down from generation to generation. You'd have this turtle that remembered you (maybe) and your great-grandkids who never met you would be feeding this thing.

actually, it is a bad argument. assuming you aren't accumulating risk (i.e. from aging) then your chances of dying remain the same every dayTsakali wrote:it's actually not a bad argument, ignoring the reality of a 'backup copy' existing.
a bit like throwing a dice: you'll eventually throw a 6, but the chances of throwing it don't go up the more you throw it
Re: Just remember folks, I called this. immortality.
too bad its perception of reality is sped up in comparison to the rest of us. So I don't think 250 years really felt like 250 years to it.

maybe it just lives in the moment; day to day?
Re: Just remember folks, I called this. immortality.
i'm thinking something along the lines of its metabolic rate or someshit. a fly lives like for a few days? but its perception of the outside world "its internal clock" is somewhat experiencing time and space in a totally different rate than we do. Ever thought why they are so damn hard to catch off guard?....so I'm guessing the opposite is true for tortoise
