I'm excited about the LucasArts games that can be redone (seriously; re-release Grim Fandango on GoG already!!!)

It comes with a good DOS Box wrapper and with nGlide it will look the balls (well, it will look better). I must admit I have not tried playing the original on my machine as I can't be arsed fannying around trying to sort DOS Box stuff myself, hence my love of GoG stuff

Re: Disney acquires Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion
just install ScummVM sir. play all those Scumm games without any hassle.

Wait, Lucas having a role in the making of the new films is considered a good thing? How does that work?

Captain Mazda wrote:That link is from January. He's going to be a creative consultant for the next three films, so he'll absolutely have a role in deciding what the story will be. The fact that he won't be scriptwriting or directing means that these movies have the potential to be great. Lucas is at his best when he takes a seat in the back and lets someone else do the work.

Re: Disney acquires Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion
Yes yes, i read that, hence my confusion
Personally i think any role Lucas will have will be to the detriment of the movies, the dude has lost his mojo a long time ago (in a galaxy far away).

Uhm...this actually sounds like something Lucas would do himself...on set...right then and there...while the actors look on dumbfounded.MKJ wrote:he'll be there protecting canon, basically. so that they dont suddenly decide that luke has a brother and that jawa's are actually imperial secret service.

Re: Disney acquires Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion
should get david simon to write a gritty script about the mean streets of mos eisley
ep 7 would focus on Tal Garp Razool, dealer in Rapture - a drug that gives users temporary Force powers by metabolising midichlorians in the bloodstream - and his efforts to defend his turf while keeping his pregnant wife Ummm and disabled son in the dark about his criminal activities. ep 8 would present the Rapture wars from the perspective of Jah Mey M'Nult, a local law enforcement officer struggling with addictions of his own as his marriage falls apart. ep 9 would tie both storylines together, and end with an aging Han Solo making the jump to lightspeed over the Shark Nebula
shit would be cash

Re: Disney acquires Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion
From my understanding, Lucas' involvement is going to be very limited. He's a "consultant" on the project. He's not writing. He's not directing. He's not producing. He basically gives tips. The people with the actual creative power on this project are smart enough to know a bad idea when they see it, even from Lucas. How much do you want to bet that JJ Abrams was as dissatisfied with the prequels are most people were?
That said, I do think Abrams is overhyped and sometimes gets credit for someone else's greatness. Example: Lost. He co-created it and worked on the pilot, and that was about it. That series is really Damon Lindelof's project, but with every article on Abrams, he's represented as having been the driving force behind the show and that's just not true.
At the end of the day, though, I know he loves Star Wars, is respected by some industry giants that have been around for decades, and as pretty much all of us have thought at some point, there's no way he can fuck it up as badly as George did with Episode I.

and how did that show turn out?Mogul wrote:That said, I do think Abrams is overhyped and sometimes gets credit for someone else's greatness. Example: Lost. oh yeah: a convoluted, narratively top-heavy disappointment that ultimately collapsed under the weight of expectations it couldn't possibly live up to
Re: Disney acquires Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion
i don't like that flinty-eyed midget who's in all the MI films, but the third one was pretty good - especially for phillip seymour hoffman. he's great when he gets a chance to chew the scenery, that interrogation scene on the plane was brilliant.DTS wrote:I liked Mission: Impossible III.

abrams' spielberg/donner tribute/polesmoke (super 8) and star trek were both pretty good too, if a bit sterile - he's a very 'safe' choice and like Mogul said, he's a big fan of the series. it's more lucas that bothers me. in the 'making of' shows for the original trilogy and the original indiana jones movies, he has this keen eye for what will make a sequence work and tie a story together, it seems like he understands everyone's job on the set and he's able to alter what he wants accordingly. jump ahead to the making of red tails or the new trilogy and he's a different person. a much older, fatter, dumber person who desperately needs to shut the fuck up and go away. you can see the director of red tails turning from cheery enthusiasm at the beginning to acting like a prison bitch at the end, all the light in his eyes is gone.
hopefully with these new ones, disney/abrams will have some shark in a suit acting as an influence-limiting buffer. obviously they'll make their money back many times over - but surely they could make a shit-ton more without lucas's franchise-nerfing input.

so Han Solo travelling back in time to save teenage Luke from time-travelling Emperor Palpatine is a good idea now?

Re: Disney acquires Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion
He made a movie with the Star Trek branding, yes. But I need not remind you it was like no Star Trek movie or episode I ever saw. He turned Star Trek into a flashy summer blockbuster type movie, similar in breathless pace as a disaster film. Yes, it was more mainstream and flashy so that general audiences could get on board, but let's not kid ourselves that he turned the franchise into something it's not and these types of blockbusterish films are usually dumber than a bag of hammers...which is exactly how dumb Episode 1,2 and 3 were....so I see no reason to believe the dumb will diminish. I'm sure no matter what that xer0s will love it.Don Carlos wrote:Because Star Trek ended up badly...GONNAFISTYA wrote:Great, so it'll be not just stupid but cheesy.
In short I'm asking: do we really want to go down the "reimagined" road again with this franchise, particularly with a director who's history of projects are all popcorn moronics? Will there be a fucking polar bear walking the deserts of Tattooine? Will there be cameos who's only existance is to make dumb audience members clap and cheer when they recognize something from previous installments? What's this crap about resurrecting Darth Vader? They don't even hide their cynical cashgrabs anymore and audiences keep lapping it up.

Everyone thinks of J.J. Abrams exactly how they think of Spielberg: they think he's better than he actually is because they without fail get caught up in the hype without admitting that it's (usually) stupid garbage.
