Don't know if where you are from but for the last few years they (government) have been pushing for the masses to install solar panels on their home to supplement the power grid.

A true scam on my book.

Yes they get a rebate for contributing to the energy grins but the initial outlays :smirk: Dunno

I don't have the actual numbers, but I know for a fact that a solar panel earns back itself in a matter of years.

Yes, but years?

Do not forget the maintenance of them also.

Here, if harness safety access is required (read most installations) the anchor bolts (fastenings) need to be checked yearly, then add the cleaning of the same panels for the best output.

I do wonder...

With natural gas prices dropping it takes more than a few years for solar to pay for itself...more like decades...

If you live in a climate where you need to run A/C during the summer, you actually save more money/energy by installing a cold roof (white, reflective, low light absorption, etc).

solar (especially with the government feed-in tariffs) is a good deal, it's as simple as that. cleaning and maintenance is cheap in comparison to power from the grid. installing the panels (the expensive bit) is being literally halved in price every year. there are lots of technological innovations coming to market, e.g. better output, self-cleaning, self-diagnostics - and you get a degree of independence from the grid and insulation from price changes.

if you don't trust solar then maybe you've been hanging around with that nubile hippy at work too much :)
