As someone who's had broken wrists I'd recommend against lifting before getting it checked. Insist on an x-ray because some doctors will tell you it's just sprained when it's actually broken and you can do further damage the more you use it. Better safe than sorry.

Trust me on this, get it checked.

GKY, what do you know? The heaviest thing you've lifted is a couple of pizza boxes. Andy has been lifting much heavier things for years. Surely he knows how to diagnose his own breaks and sprains. Who needs a doctor when you can lift heavy objects?

that's coz the program is all about huge amounts of calories with the purpose of gaining as much strength as possible. The programming isn't my cup of tea necessarily, but the technique instruction is great.

It's good for beginners who are involved in sports or are interested in eventually doing power-lifting competition. It leads to a lot of hypertrophy-phobia though, so people who refuse to change from a pure strength program (a lot of them go SS -> madcow -> 5/3/1) end up with a pear shaped body/no upper development.

What do you mean by hypertrophy phobia? As far as I can tell, the program encourages hypertrophy.

Well you're right in that doing any exercise encourages hypertrophy more than doing none, but it's almost purely a strength program, and has 3x a week squatting. People who do it get into the mindset that hypertrophy programs are shit and strength programs are for real men, and end up with DYEL physiques

I've just started reading practical programming so I'm not too familiar with it, but to say that the program is pure strength and therefore anti-hypertrophy doesn't make sense. Sure, it isn't focused on hypertrophy as an end in itself, but hypertrophy will certainly occur to a significant degree.

but yea, there are a lot of rippetoe nuthuggers out there who treat him as an infallible god.

Either way, I'm interested in it for the technique and mechanical analysis of the lifts.

I'm curious Jules...when you're wiping your ass with toilet water do you squat over the bowl and go "ass to grass" and manage to get your taint below the rim of the bowl?

Also...when you're wiping your ass with toilet water are you wearing workout shoes?

The program isn't anti-hypertophy, it's simply unbalanced, lacking upper body growth from an aesthetic perspective. I'm saying that the SL/SS programs create an anti-hypertrophy mindset because the people think that strength training is the be-all and end-all of working out, and people who do hypertrophy work are idiots wasting their time or something.

What calculator did you use? I used the IIFYM one and it put me around 2670 maintenance. I started using myfitnesspal on my phone for my recomp, I've logged the last 12 days straight, it really helps so much with figuring out my intake.

you realize that there's not just one program right? the basic program is for novices.

sent a friend request... also sent one to a 'feedback' earlier today thinking it was you ... lol

f'ing strained my low back for no reason this morning when i got up. It just decided it didn't like me, I guess. After an hour of almost crawling around, I made it to walgreens and got a heat pad, hand held massager, and some solid tennis balls to help this thing. Got it to the point where I could kind of move around, made it to the gym, got my workout done, made all my lifts :)
Yes it hurt a tad, but only if I bent at the low back. So it actually helped me get in the correct start position for snatching because if it wasn't right, it was very painful. Otherwise, felt super strong today... thank you krill oil and 3400 calories yesterday :)
