Yes death traps. Totally unlike cars, which you get into every day because they're perfectly safe and not dangerous at all due to all drivers behaving in a completely responsible manner when on the road.

Still, it's possible to do a little speculation with the data that are available. Between 2005 and 2009, there was an annual average of 1.44 fatalities (PDF) per 100,000 flying hours in nonmilitary helicopters. Over the same period, there were 13.2 traffic fatalities per 100,000 population in the United States annually. Since the average American spends around 780 hours per year (PDF) in the car, that means the fatality rate per 100,000 hours of driving time is just 0.017. Based on hours alone, helicopters are 85 times more dangerous than driving.

I done my own math by just comparing the helicopters / deaths and cars / deaths a while back, helicopter lost again (I think it was something like 1 death for every 5000 cars and 1 in 600 for heli's)

Private aviation has stats that are just as shoddy though, the flight safety vs cars stat only really applies when compared to commercial airliners. So wont be getting me on no private plane either (or Air France, or 747s, theres prolly more...)

Nice post, when I finish this job I'm going to follow your advice, I've been wanting to get into RC stuff and these seem a bit more my thing over cars. I was considering tanks but they actually seem a bit boring once you've constructed them.

Yeah, helis are much more demanding and satisfying over planes as well. There's just so much to be had there. BTW the one I have now is a Tarot 450 pro v2 FBL. Very popular, so there's plenty of community info and part suppliers. You should look into it when you're ready

not from them but to be honest, I've been dealing with ebay for a long time, and as long as they accept paypal (which pretty much all do) and as long as they have a respectable amount of positive feedback, you really can't go wrong. All these chinese guys aim to please, they recognize the potential of western clients and they do their best to keep you happy.
Fyi, the V911 is going around in 4 diff. colors red, blue, black and yellow. the yellow doesn't come with a complete kit(batteries/charger/controller), so go with one of the former.

PROTIP: wherever you choose to buy from, just make sure it specifically says v911. It's cheap enough, no need to try to get a knock off for 5~10 dollars less.

Also, when you ready to really look into this subject just visit RCGroups.com super active forums with a lot of info.
Happy flying

So, I got one of those little v911 choppers, it's so much fun.

The difference between this and the other miniature ones I've tried is massive. It's taken me a day to work out how to not just bang it off the walls and ceilings as soon as it takes off (it's really windy at the moment, so i'm having to fly it indoors) and I'm having a blast, it's a really good feeling to swerve it through a doorway and circle strafe round the light fitting before bringing it to a gentle controlled landing ontop of a shoebox. I got 4 batteries including a couple of 200maH but they still don't last very long. That's really the only drawback.

heyy! you got one :D yeah they are alot of fun ... beyond anything those little 3 channel ones can ever hope to do.
If you feel like you want even more precision, just take a piece of chop stick and shoved it in the controller stick's top end to make it longer.

Too bad it is really too small for any type of weather.... but if you ever find yourself in an large indoor area you can really let that thing loose
