Haha as if people actually stick to that shit.

My parents are "Christians and their church was doing a rice and beans thing for this past week. They were supposed to only eat beans and rice, and donate the money they saved. http://www.crossroads.net/beansandrice Supposed to teach you humility and shit cause we have it pretty good here.

I went there for dinner Thursday. Here's the rice and beans they got for the week:

Here's dinner:

They ate like this all week but still were tellin people how they're doing "rice and beans week" and blah blah blah. These are typical American Christians as far as I've seen. They think that since they can just donate the money anyway they don't have to eat the shit, completely missing the point.

Is it a Beans and Rice sponsored church by any chance ?.

I get the doing 'penance' and 'walking in Gods footsteps' thing but we don't need to stab ourselves in the face to know it'll feel uncomfortable for others.

Changing the rules to suite your needs too, like sex before marriage or replacing no food in daytime with beans and rice. These people must know what they're doing is bullshit, they're the forefathers of trolls.

so....

I have a lot of respect for Jesus and his sacrifice so that I could have a 4 day weekend.

lol that's bullshit. Easter is based around passover, this story could of been pulled from many other religions at the time which the Romans were notorious for and can't be traced to any one. It's entirely possible that Jesus was a real person too, as opposed to someone that's surrounded in mythology (like King Arthur).

Jesus isn't a make believe person. It's the hocus pocus surrounding him that's make believe.
People not able to make such simple distinctions muddy the conversation.

There's enough text to suggest he was a real a person as anyone else from those days, more so than Ishtar which was kinda your point.

And why are you linking Ishtar to Lent ?, why not Krishna ?, dumbo...

Jesus never existed. He was based off of older myths because the church needed a hero for their re-write of the Bible (New Testament) because God himself with his wretched anger towards humanity wasn't very appealing to "new customers".

Seriously...anyone who believes Jesus actually existed is a fucking idiot. I say this because there are actual atheists who believe he existed, but wasn't the messiah. Those people are idiots, too.

Like I said, more so than Ishtar or King Arthur (who I think existed) that is surrounded by mythology/rumour and far less text that was later written down or carved in stone. I'm just saying it's slightly possible, maybe.

So I suppose using your own parameters on what is "possible" then Robin Hood or the Story of Zeus "might" be real?

Do you have any idea how many stupid people in the world believe Greek and Norse mythology actually happened? Do you have any idea how many stupid people in the world think "Ghost Hunters" is real?

Don't be a stupid person.

Romans were persecuting the Christians long before the bible was written, as far as I know you can only be a Christian if you are a follower of Jesus Christ (superstar). Just because Christianity wasn't popular at the time and all media was controlled, how are we meant to say for certain due to a lack of evidence ?

it's great when we have these informed debates

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historicity_of_Jesus
Virtually all modern scholars of antiquity agree that Jesus existed, and biblical scholars and classical historians regard theories of his non-existence as effectively refuted. While there is little agreement on the historicity of gospel narratives and their theological assertions of his divinity most scholars agree that Jesus was a Galilean Jew who was born between 7 and 2 BC and died 30–36 AD. Most scholars hold that Jesus lived in Galilee and Judea, did not preach or study elsewhere and that he spoke Aramaic and may have also spoken Hebrew and possibly Greek. Although scholars differ on the reconstruction of the specific episodes of the life of Jesus, the two events whose historicity is subject to "almost universal assent" are that he was baptized by John the Baptist and shortly afterwards was crucified by the order of the Roman Prefect Pontius Pilate.
