So the bit about Inception: I don't see how this makes sense. Why would Leo's character lie about his totem? Not really sure what motivation he has to tell everyone it's the top, when it's really the ring.

Because the top is a retarded totem otherwise. Basically, anyone who was trying to trick him would just have to put a normal top in the dream. They wouldn't even have to know it was his totem to trick him. Watch this video for a great explanation.
