Depends if the new job is going to take you somewhere. Chances are you aren't going to stay at the same place forever, so if the new job has room for expansion then I'd take it.

People spend way too much of their life at work to not enjoy it.

Cheers for the thoughts fellas :)

To clarify a few things:

I don't work for the government, i work for a company whose only client is the department of Justice. The company is part of a group of similar companies, all with government clients only. It's the suits at HQ of the group that calls the shots on contracts. All of the companies in the group ran at a loss last year - except for us. Other places are shrinking or even closing up, and people with permanent contracts have to be fired (expensive) or dumped at places elsewhere in the group. At the expense of people who have temporary contracts, who are cheaper to get rid of.

As for my contract; while i've been and will be scared every time it's up for renewal, i'm strangely unafraid of being ditched after 3 years. Guess i'm pretty convinced they'll intend to keep me. Needless to say i will be having something lined up by that time, just in case... but yeah.

Threatening with the job offer in order to get a raise is the natural course of action, but it won't do me any good. My boss is not in control of the contracts... The upper management can maybe do something, but even that is a long shot.

The other place would be mostly the same work, only it would be in an office environment instead of a clinic. In other words, far more boring and unrewarding. Except monetarily.
Eraser wrote:As for this being gov't regulated, just try and make a deal if you can apply for a different position. What I mean is that you're hired as some administrative suit with a matching pay. Have them come up with a position that actually matches the work you do and let them Tue a nice salary (higher scale, or whatevt its called in Engrish) to it.
This is very very interesting, it seems like something that could work. Best suggestion yet, i'll have to look into it. Thanks man!

There room to move in the dept of Justice ?, possibly back to your old position in 18months ? ;p. Either way tis not a bad situation to be in issit ? :], you'll be alreet whatever dude

It is absolutely daft that a company would rather advertise your position to someone else and have you leave though. I know bureaucracy is responsible for stranger things but in situations like that you'd hope someone would see sense innit :/

edit: I just realised that I'm assuming you're covering 2 positions, yours +1 and wondering why you can't just apply for the unfilled position your currently doing :/.

take the better paying job. no one's saying you have to stick with it, but it's more money, and you're in a comfortable position while looking around for other more rewarding jobs. don't rely on them offering you a perm contract in 18 months if the decision is being made by someone who doesn't even know you

or someone who does know you, because you're obviously a cunt :p

Chances are he knows you're an asset and that he's getting your skills and labour at a knock down rate, he's not going to pay you more unless you threaten to leave, why would he? It'll either jolt him into giving you what you deserve or if he says no, then you're not appreciated anyway and it might be worth going elsewhere anyway.
the best and most intelligent advice here!

holy mackerels you are awesome!

Ryo keep in mind you must have no fear or self doubt for this to be most effective.

This - I have learnt the hard way that you should take the money. Loyalty is good but only if it works both ways and you know that it will be given back once you have shown it.

Even if you do hate the job, you are on money which means the next job you get will (should) be more again.

loyalty doesn't really exist in the workplace anyway. a company won't keep you on out of loyalty; they'll keep you on only as long as the surplus value of your labour to the company over the cost of employing you is sufficiently high

It was obvious enough: you don't owe your employer any kind of loyalty because they will not afford you the same courtesy.

Some sound advice in previous posts... so I will try not to repeat, but to contribute.

Ryoki, I think it really mostly depends on what's most important on your list.
Depends on your situation. For example the girl variable...Iss this just a girlfriend?/ how long? do you feel that her presence in your life is credible enough to affect your personal long term plans ?

If so, you'd most likely go for the money, because it's going to have the most effect on you as a couple, and in time possibly a family. If you go with what you actually enjoy, that would be a more personal choice, based on something that concerns you internally and has no effect on others in your life...not directly.

I wasn't going to buy in but needed to for the sake of Ryoki :D and yes, some decent advice has been offered, but I see it like this.

IMO, the employer of today pays (pun) nothing to the better employee, simply perhaps and because of the threat of litigation/retribution being so prominent in the society of today, they dare not.

Yes, it does depend on what is really important to you now but, whatever decision you make, I am confident (in hindsight) it will have been the best. Not too many choose the wrong path in this career/employment selection and I have been around long enough to be pretty sure here.

Personally, early in my life, I jumped into the money because it did suit me then. I did heaps of overtime and thankfully my health didn't suffer or did it? If it did I count myself rather fortunate.

A last piece of advice Ryoki: Be confident in you choice to the point of being cocky. Shine among your work peers and take on responsibility willingly; enjoy as I am sure you (already) do.

Given the evidence thus far I would explore the Justice Department offer :)

Thanks guys. I'm one of those people who makes big decisions by gathering the opinions of many people, so really, thanks. It helped.

I've decided to do what Eraser proposed, it really looks like that might get some results. Good thing i'm on real good terms with the upper management lady who does all the finance stuff (comes from her businesslike attitude, a rare thing in healthcare - i can totally relate to it having worked only in commercial businesses up to this job. Also, she's a hot MILF with fantastic legs, yowza), i'll speak to her about it next week, skipping my direct boss in the process.

After a bit of sleep i've decided the other job would probably be a major step back funwise, and i really do enjoy my fun. It just wouldn't be the same in an office environment. I also see better future prospects at my current company than at the JD, if they don't get rid of me that is.

So there you go! :)

Just one more piece of advice, not really related at the moment, but worth considering in the future:
No matter how good you think you are at your job, nobody is irreplaceable.

A bit pessimistic, sure, but ultimately true.
