upgrading video card

Post by PieceMaker »

The video card I'll be getting takes up two slots ( AGP and one PCI ).

What I'd like to know is the best route in going about taking my
sound card which is in the PCI slot next to the AGP slot. Taking that
card and putting it in the open slot next to that.

Concerns & quandaires:

Should I un-install the sound card then remove the card and place it in the
next slot? Re-install drivers and done?

Should I not un-install the drivers and just shut-down the system
and change slots?

I haven't come upon this situation and I know this to me as I type
this sounds like something soo simple. I just want to do this all up
the correct way.

I'd like to do this before I get the video card so I'd simply have the
install of the new video card and power supply.

By the way the video card is :icon10: this one.

I also bought a 550w power supply.

Thanks for any help.

Well my guess is you can simply change the slot, but you if that doesn'r work then uninstall the drivers. I think you might get a "new device" thing when you start up Windows, but I think the drivers for it will reclaim it

TBH I don't really know, but I would say the uninstalling of sound card would most likely be the most surefire method.

BTW what grahpics card do you have currently?

nice upgrade piece. now you just need a new cpu to keep up to it.

if youre gonna change the soundcard around, i would uninstall first.

you'll be all ready for bfII

No need to reinstall the drivers; just shut it down and move the card down two slots to give more airflow on account of the cards size. Nice upgrade btw.

Yup, great upgrade. I would go for it later if it were PCI-E.

I asked what video card you had for the purpose of seeing if you were going from ATi to nVIDIA. BTW what are the rest of your specs

pentium 4 2.2
512 megs ram
a few hard drives
geforce3ti200 64 meg
live value card (I think)
cd-rom (would like to get a dvd burner soon but this is something I've needed)

You see this all worked out with my wife
getting together with family and pooling some
$ together since I've got some medical stuff going on and having surgery tomorrow.

Damn I love my wife for doing this. She is amazing.

Well I better get back to work and see what I can get done before I go home. ;)

I appreciate the info everyone!!!!! I'll let you know how "everything" goes when all is done.

*big wave* :D

I can't believe you got a 6800 Ultra instead of the GT. Such a small difference for the 25% higher price. And with a P4 2.2 & 512MB RAM? :(

Or if you clicked his link you would realize that the 6800 Ultra he bought is the same price as 6800GTs due to a rebate. As for the bottleneck computer I agree with you

No...it's not the same price.
Newegg sells multiple 6800GTs for just under $300. So it actually costs 33% more before and 25% more after the rebate.

Anyways, enjoy the card. :)

I ment to comment and thank you on this one.

Worked a charm. I removed a modem pci card I had that I haven't used.
Then took the sound card and moved it a few slots down for some
space between the video card and sound card.

I made sure all was seated and then put the system back together.

Re-started and it found everything without a hitch :icon14:

I totally agree about the CPU and ram bottleneck but I'm comfortable
with it for now.

I should of done a little more looking I know but I saw a good deal
and jumped on it and that's the breaks for me.

The card is amazing though!!! The damn thing weighed like 3 times as much
as my prior card when I took the old one out. lol.

When I get time I think I'll do a fresh install on a spare hard drive I
have and see how the system does without all the bloat I have on it. :icon25:

oh and a pic of the old and new cards --->old & new
