Perhaps the reviewers having trouble with it have poor wireless routers and/or lots of network interference. Packet loss is already pretty bad with wireless signals and something like this you wouldn't have much tolerance.

The more I read about it the less convinced I am. That article speaks of a few issues I hadn't even considered, like the framerate of the streamed video, audio lag and the effects on the readability of UI elements when downscaling to a 5" screen.

I think I'll just add $300 to my PC buying budget and buy a high end laptop instead. I can just move that around if I want to game elsewhere. So far it still feels like the best tradeoff between performance and mobility.
