Pinball

Post by xer0s »

This is a long shot, but is anyone into pinball or own their own machine? I recently acquired a 1985 Chicago Cubs Triple Play and have been restoring it. I love working on this kind of shit. Just curious if there's any pinheads up in here...

Proud owner of a 1971 Bally Fireball. Fuck those electrical machines, these mechanical units are where it's at.
Currently being revised by an enthousiast.. the years haven't been kind to the bumpers.

Nice! Are you doing any of the revisions yourself? Or are you not that interested?

I'm really enjoying getting my hands in there and rebuilding the flipper mechanisms and restoring the play field. One flipper wasn't working at all, but the end of stroke switch needed adjusted. I'm going to attempt to replace a transistor on the light board. But I'm new to soldering and really don't want to fuck up the board. The only thing I really can't fix is the paint on the play field. It's worn off in a few spots...

Soldering is easy enough, just remember not too much heat near any semi conductors or you will have problems. I used to use needle nose pliers, not only to hold the piece but it also a rather good heat :D sink while you operate.

.... and no, never owned a pinball machine but played plenty in my youth. Was it 10c a game then? I am sure it was.

Jealous you are renovating/restoring, yes.
I imagine parts would be hard to come by these days xer0s? Comment.

My dad bought it back in the 70s brand new for a steal, later passed it on to me when he emigrated. I used to do small repairs and replacements myself, but this time it was just too banged up. This thing doesn't work with transistors or circuits.. which is fun to figure out which wire does what and why, but also a bitch cos it has 220V going through each and every part. Managed to get zapped a few times.
It still has it's original wiring and after 40 years those wires started to decompose, causing short circuits left and right. Ergo I went out to find somebody to do a total renovation of the thing. At first he said he was able to do it in my home - I'd rather not move it more than I need to - but he underestimated the work needed. So now it's in the shop, and I'm anxiously waiting for its return.
He did give all the woodwork a nice buff.. looked great

There are a few websites that sell general parts. But if you need specific plastic art, you're shit out of luck in some cases. Luckily all the plastic art on my machine is still good...

Hey we're kind of in the same boat. This machine was sitting in my dad's garage for years collecting dust. So I just took it and decided to fix it up. Can't wait to show dad when I get it done...

Chicago Cubs? Perfect name for a pinball machine, there's no way of winning that game. :olo:

oh yea it looks pretty good ey

take tons of documentation style pics with nice flat perspectives in case you have to print graphics or stencils maybe

that brown tint in the internal compartment could be from out gassing from the wiring ey

are the wires sticky?

i hate when that happens in old amps

and yea MKJ it'll be aces to see it when its done ey

The brown is probably caused by all the dust that comes off the solenoids...
