Samsung galaxy note 3 or HTC One Max?...

The Google Play Edition phones will be interesting to watch. 4.3 was released on Nexus devices exactly a week ago, so let's see how long it takes them to update.

I'd go for HTC. I've had an HTC for two years, dropped it probably 100 times and it still works like a champ. My friends have all gone through 3-4 Samsungs in the same amount of time.

That said, the HTC (at least the one I have) seems to be relatively tricky to root, if you're into that sort of game. *shrug*

I've dropped my S3 repeatedly, had it soaked in crude oil, saltwater, dirt, etc. and it still works just fine too. Friend of mine dropped his HTC and cracked the screen. It's all relative.

friend sold me her brand new galaxy s3 for $50. First smart phone ever. Unfortunately, won't work with my phone provider, mobilicity (i've rooted and unlocked, but the carrier frequencies aren't supported), but works great for other things. Took me a while to learn how to get cyanogenmod going

HTC is releasing the Desire 500 (dumb name) as entry level phone for just €249. Interesting option for me, as it's equipped with a 4.3" screen (not too big) and a quad core 1.2GHz CPU (more than fast enough). The only possible dealbreaker is the 800x480 display resolution. Why not put a 720p display in there? Or at the very least 960x540.
