Watched it. In general he didn't tell anything I didn't know before but he kind of connected all the loose bits of knowledge I had into one, relatively easy to understand package. There's also quite a lot of specifics that he has knowledge about though. Most impressive though, is that I suddenly have this huge appreciation for how light actually works in the real world. The number of photons whizzing around is just mind boggling.bitWISE wrote:Second talk from John is up

All this knowlegde he spouts off doesn't mean shit until he makes another great game...
Re: QuakeCon 2013
The thing is that he doesn't really make games, he makes graphics engines. Tim Willits is responsible for creating a great game on top of that.xer0s wrote:All this knowlegde he spouts off doesn't mean shit until he makes another great game...
Re: QuakeCon 2013
he is starting to realize that by himself he cannot compete. those days are over...he might need to clone himself.

Aye, the intelligence and opinion of a man about a genre that he created or an industry he formed the backbone of doesn't mean jack shit

Re: QuakeCon 2013
2nd QC for me this year, was fun but nowhere near the people cos playing as last year. 2nd year in a row some random guy walked up and within 20 mins was sitting in our section playing Q2 LMCTF. Funny how we've recruited new blood to a 15 year old mod just by going to the con. We also did a group visit of Medieval Times and got shithoused (and prob close to being kicked out lol). Who's coming next year?

Deal! We shall speak of this closer to the time to see how I am doing financially as I will want to tag it on to a trip to the CrossFit Games and a few other bits and bobs if I canxer0s wrote:Donny, I tell ya what, if you come next year I'll be sure and make it down there. It happened in 2001 so why not next year? :P
Re: QuakeCon 2013
Video shot at QuakeCon before and after opening. It's all shot with a drone flying through the halls. At 8 minutes it's a bit long but it does give a good impression I reckon.
Somewhere around 2 - 3 minutes you see the conference hall where Carmack gave his keynote. Those are a lot of chairs.

I was there! Had a great time playing and getting hammered. Running into SyncError was also a nice surprise.
Can't wait for next year

you must be one of those posters who only posts at quake3world when the subject under discussion is quake 3 - which makes you a better person than anyone else on this board

How was the Rage engine? I haven't been following id much at all in the last 10 years. Have they done anything truly fantastic like they used to?Eraser wrote:The thing is that he doesn't really make games, he makes graphics engines. Depends on who you ask. If you ask me, then I'd say the engine Rage uses (idTech 5) is a very impressive feat of technology. I don't think I've ever seen a game that looks as pretty as Rage does. And the quality of id Software's artwork is second to none.Chupacabra wrote:How was the Rage engine? I haven't been following id much at all in the last 10 years. Then again, if you ask someone like brisk, you'll get the exact opposite answer.
The thing with idTech 5 is that the use of its megatexture technology can lead to some impressive things, but the limitations still present on modern day PCs (mostly in the form of the amount of content that can be distributed) leads to some technical trade-offs. The thing with Rage is that if you take a general look at the locations in the game, it looks absolutely baffling most of the time. However, if you move up real close and press your face up to a wall, you'll see that the texture resolution is not cutting it in many cases and you get somewhat blurry looking surfaces.
Now depending on what you're looking for and if you actually let this bug you, you'll form an opinion somewhere on the scale from the game looking crap to the game looking fantastic. IMO the game is fast paced enough that there's barely any time to get hung up on low res textures. I mean, if you're staring at a wall from 2 inches distance, then you're not doing it right. Also, I firmly believe that the overall level of detail in the game makes the inconsistencies in image quality more obvious. If you look at many other games, including top-of-the-line technical feats like Gears of War 3, Far Cry 3, Battlefield 3 or Crysis 3, you'll see similar texturing issues, but they're less apparent in those games.
Re: QuakeCon 2013
Rage looked great, IMO. Gameplay was rather mediocre, it's a pretty linear game with some optional side quests.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, but I miss the days when FPS games were a giant maze you had to run around and explore the map and find items you needed to survive. It made them challenging, you had to use your brain to navigate the map, different guns gave you tactical advantages over certain types of enemies, you can't just hid behind a crate and regenerate health (or in the case of Rage, magically resurrect yourself when you died). Really, there's no penalty for dying.
id Software used to be the king at making giant mazes from Wolfenstein to Quake 2, but in trying to cater to the epic storyline driven gameplay demanded by other games, they've strayed away from what they're good at and made some pretty generic on-rails type games that are just like any other game out there, only better looking. Give me a gun, toss me in a maze, and let me run around and find my health kits.
Also, watch this... he explains exactly what I'm getting at.

Re: QuakeCon 2013
I would like the industry to move back to health pickups rather than magical regen powers as well. It forced you to press on even if you were low on health. The best moments in Q2 were when low on health and hearing a berserker, gladiator parasite (tap tap, tap tap) around the corner. Finding a healthpack was a hallelujah moment.
Re: QuakeCon 2013
You also had to choose between picking up a health pack now, or save it for later. If you were at 90% health, you would save the 25% health pack.

oh i see. so are other companies licensing this engine like they did with the quake 3(?) engine?
Re: QuakeCon 2013
In a sort of weird move Bethesda decided that idTech 5 is only available for developers who publish their game through Bethesda themselves. Currently Doom 4 is the only known idTech 5 game besides Rage.
