You're right they have an obligation to the shareholder but that obligation isn't tied to share price, the owner can run the company as he sees fit. On the public market if a quarterly report shows shares fall for whatever reason a huge power struggle will surely follow and opens valve up to litigation from damaging the comapanies value.

The stipulations I mentioned are also important. Usually shareholders are required to stay silent.

I read an article ages ago that Gabe have each employee a tiny amount of the company when steam came out and now every single one of those employees is a millionaire...

Eurgh, private shareholders can take valve to court for devaluing stock n all, we know this they operate in the same environment :/. It's just harder to do this because they don't have to provide projections for end of year reports and the end of year accounts would have to show a big loss consistantly for the claim to be taken seriously. I should have really said the importance of that obligation isn't geared to share price.

It's early :/

THE PLOT THICKENS!
The Valve voice actor who last week suggested Half-Life 3 was not currently in production has retracted his statement.

John Patrick Lowrie has removed the comments from his personal blog and posted a retraction - reproduced in full below.

So, is Half-Life 3 in production after all? Lowrie now claims "I really don't know".

"My comments just seemed to cause a whole bunch of confusion and when I tried to minimize the confusion I misspoke and caused a whole bunch more confusion," he said. "The most important thing to know about voice actors is that we're the last to know anything. We don't find out about a project until we get hired to do voices for it.

"What I was trying to say before (and failed) is that whatever Gabe Newell has to say about a project is the best info you're going to get. He owns the company and knows what's going on.

"Sorry that I gave the impression that I know what's going on. I really wasn't trying to and I really don't know."

It's obvious it's in the works. Secrets are only kept for things that are actually happening. If they weren't working on it, they'd just say so...

Either that, or keeping the HL3 hype alive is a sure way to keep yourself and your games in the spotlight. I mean, whenever Valve announces doing something (or it leaking out) they can be sure of gazillions of articles about how game X they're doing is not HL3.

But how long can they keep that up without producing the goods and pissing fans off?

Not entirely true, they did release some vague and generic concept art 2 years ago.
