What's the translator?
Tool to move brushes around? Click inside the the brush and Drag it as you like.

The gizmo ? Press the "W" key, or more likely the "Z" key if you're with a english keyboard. At least for GtkRadiant 1.5.

Do you want me to fill out a feature request for you on the GtkRadiant issue tracker?

Well, I know I can drag pieces as i like, but the translator makes it so much easier, it gives you straight X, Y, and Z arrows to drag pieces by....It really helps. . .i used it more than anything...

Fill out an issue. Label the title with something like, "Feature Request: Translation tool from GtkRadiant 1.5". Then describe in detail what the feature does, how to use it, and why it's important to you.

I made a note on the issue tracker along with the rotation gizmo request.

Thanks guys, I'm downloading the new GTK, but I'm wondering, what was the last version that had the translator tool, and why can't I find an old version anywhere that still has it? I'm not trying to do anything serious, but I can't even tinker around without that translator. It's a very very important tool to me.

if you can find the version that still has translator just post me a link or upload or even send it to me at jeffrey_foster@nsmail.asun.edu

I really don't get 1.6, there are so many things that I do in 1.5 that can't be done in 1.6, I tried to use it and just hit brick walls.

Like... copy one texture from a face and paste it onto as many faces as you want just with ctrl+shift+lmb. Drag selection. Texture browser. Vertices editing. Etc...

Some people say, yeah but those features are buggy in 1.5, but I never experienced any bugs with them, actually never experienced any major bugs in 1.5 at all (strangely everyone says 1.5 is full of bugs?), but 1.6 makes me want to punch my monitor if I am really honest.

I don't get how its more efficient Oo

Anyway I'm not ungrateful for it, I just don't understand it :D

A bit of history...

Q3Radiant was the version used by id Software internally to develop the maps for Q3A. While working at id Software, TTimo modified it and introduced GtkRadiant using the Gimp Tool Kit so that it would work with Linux and Mac systems in addition to the already supported Windows. It also introduced support for multiple game packs. That project was lead by TTimo all the way up to GtkRadiant 1.4.0.

SPoG was learning how to program and took the 1.4 source and made an experimental branch with some rather drastic changes and this became the 1.5 branch. I remember when that branch was launched, there were many complaints about missing features and some completely different shortcut mappings. I guess a lot of people just got used to it, while for others it became the first editor they used so weren't aware of such changes. Word is that SPoG probably didn't really know what he was doing on the back-end of things since he wasn't really an experienced programmer, so while the interface might have arguably been an improvement, the code was difficult to manage.

id Software (probably lead by TTimo) started a new branch based off of the 1.4 code for the development of Quake Live (dubbed Quake Zero at the time), naming it ZeroRadiant. This version lead by TTimo started picking up development by the community after a very long hiatus from any development and became GtkRadiant 1.6. The confusion is that the evolution from 1.4 to 1.5 and then the roll back to 1.4 to 1.6 caused some confusion for newer mappers who never used one of the prior-to-1.4 versions. But for the old-school mappers, it feels just like home.

All that said, GtkRadiant 1.6 is the only actively developed branch of GtkRadiant. Even NetRadiant development has trickled down. There are a number of features coming to the next release that I'm sure a lot of you would be excited about, some ported over from 1.5 and others completely new. Pasting textures works with CTRL+SHIFT+MMB. There is some work on the texture browser, but looks like that will be an ongoing effort. The feature I wanted is a toggle button that allows for all newly created brushes to be detail, has been added. 1.6.4 will be a big release.

Wonderful history... great narrative... I was aware of some things but not in detail.

I am still hoping the 1.5er rotation of models (or any form of interactive rotation) is added to 1.6.

Thanks Obsidian for taking the time to explain all of that so clearly, I understand it so much better now.

Like AEon I understood some things, but not in detail, so it was confusing.

I'm looking forward to seeing what happens with 1.6, and I'm very grateful we have people such as yourself working on these things :)

There's an issue listed for that, though it might take some time before that is addressed. I think the priority is still stability, platform support and game support.
