Impressive find indeed, that's a huge haul but finds like these happen quite a bit. It's not unusual to find a few coins but if you find a collection then you're one of the lucky ones.

This dude wasn't that long ago -
The St Albans Hoard is a large hoard of late Roman gold coins found by a metal detectorist in a field near St Albans in Hertfordshire in 2012. It is believed to be one of the largest hoards of Roman gold coins ever found in Britain. The hoard consists of 159 solidi dating from the last decades of the fourth century AD, near the end of the Roman occupation of Britain.[1] After about 408
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Albans_Hoard

Most of them are from around this time period n all, during the Saxon invasions. Saxons never left survivors so it's thought that these treasures were never retrieved because there was no one left to without the defence of the Romans.

Find it impressive that finds like these can still be made. They found found an entire ship full of shit from the same period in Newport and that was only a few years back, the museums have no room left lol, thanks to the Roman Fort Newport was built around -

edit: It wouldn't be unusual to see a Tiger in Roman beliefs n all, it's a symbol of a God.

seriously though -

american archaeology: dig a 2ft x 2ft hole with a teaspoon, find a civil war musket ball and call it a day
british archaeology: whack in half a dozen 10 metre trenches with a mechanical digger, find medieval pottery, chuck it in with the rest, keep going til you reach the iron age

At what point do I sound like I'm wondering what it must be like to live in a country with some history in my reply?

I mean frankly your entire reply is completely moronic. Do you not realize people actually did live on this continent before Columbus arrived here? 0_o

This was a tribal people, something that hadn't existed in Britain for over 1600 years by the time Columbus had landed and were still amazed by stonework, in North America atleast. In Britain the metal industry had already been fueling armies for 2/3000 years across 3 rulers (Celtic / Roman / British) that loved nothing more than to fight with neighbours. The influence can still be seen today, wether it's in roads or castles. Europe by the point of Columbus landing was already heavily industrialised and provides some epic finds to the way living styles varied and their influence on modern society, local and global and how far advanced culture was in those days. Romes population during its peak for example could not be matched until the Industrial revolution, around 1000 years later.

America essentially dumped its history on top of another history, which could provide some niche beliefs that never progressed much further than arrowheads. I pissed myself when timeteam went to America and dug a trench for a WWII installation, in Britain we would've plowed through that layer with a digger to get to the good shit :smirk:

I forgot to mention the important bit, in that the stoneworking Indians skipped 1000s of years in development and history when the Euros turned up.

We're renovating the farm house we bought with the land. This A-frame dates back the 1400. We dig stuff up all the time on the land around the house, it goes in a big bin until the historical people collect it.

Pics old now, jobs almost done. The joke is getting the rebuild and woodwork done for that one room by the craftsman cost over £200k thanks to the historical society. Lol swimming pools.

Around February

Completed barn conversion.

It would actually cause me to giggle whenever I saw a date plate on a building in Europe that was dated before Canada was "discovered", let alone a country. These weren't monumental structures that were world-famous landmarks, I'm talking about quaint little houses that you couldn't normally notice if you walked past it.

One of my fav pubs in my home town was built 1340ish. It was built as a coach house so travellers could rest, eat and drink before trading at the market so it's always been a pub.

My favorite coffee shop in Copenhagen was built in 1417...long before a gold-seeking genocidal maniac by the name of Christopher Columbus was even born.

plained, I really love the piece from your original post. The color is beautiful and it has a bit of an Oriental feel. My favorite aspect is the phallus head...

I get that, but that only applies if you equate technological advancement with historical artifacts. In my eyes a 10,000 year old artifact is 10,000 years old no matter what it is.
