Now it seems Lockheed Martin – the successor to the company which created the original SR71 wants to create the ultimate 21′st centaury spy plane. However unlike the SR71, the SR72 as it is tentatively called will not be a manned plane according to Lockheed Martin but rather a hypersonic unmanned aircraft (or UAV).
While the SR71 set speed records at over 3.3 Mach (over 3 times the speed of sound), its successor is set to raise the bar even higher reaching 6 times the speed of sound when it will enter service in around 2030.

So at mach 6 they can fly over and download people's personal emails faster?
Here we are having an actual global discussion about government spying and Lockheed Martin makes this announcement? I'm sure every paranoid, rightwing, war-mongering troglodyte pumped his fist at that press release...because they're stupid human beings.
Paranoid people want their government to spy on other countries because paranoid people are paranoid and, as is always the case, paranoid people can never have enough things/people to be paranoid about so eventually they get paranoid about the government they wanted to spy on others and actually hope that it spies on them to legitimize their paranoia.
It's a crazy, nonsensical reality that can only be understood by a rightwing, war-mongering troglodyte...so good luck making sense of it.
I wonder if this actually adds anything to the US capability to see the tops of people's heads at will all over the world - seems to me like between the gazillion spy satellites and the large variety of regular drones that have been combat tested in the Bush wars that shit should be pretty much covered.
Thank god my Pentagonese is only slightly rusty, i believe i can accurately translate: "Lockheed Martin needs another financial injection US taxpayers, best pay up or China will invade!"
I'd be surprised if the US didn't have something similiar to this already, after all the SR71 was a big secret ?. If China or the Motherland kick off then drones would be like playing duck hunt and the satellites would just be missile fodder leaving the mighty US blind and dumb :P
Anyway, even if this thing is better than the blackbird it still won't be half as good

Yes the SR-71 was ahead of its time. I remember watching a documentary on it and noted a bit about leaking fuel on the runway before takeoff was surprising. They explained the joints sealed up under the heat caused by friction later into the flight
Yar I seen that one, I laughed when they said it outruns the weapons that were supposed to shoot it down (mainly due to high altitude)
We need to go back to those crazy days when someone who said 'we're gonna put a dude on a moon' actually meant it without having to take a hit of krack
Now leaky fuel would have H&S all over the place
