I'd love to hear some of these horror stories. Last year's PAX East had a panel with a bunch of guys that coded some original arcade games, and some console to arcade ports. It was interesting to hear the challenges they faced, and how nearly all of them left the gaming industry many, many years ago. These days, there are much better tools for development, but the business demand vs development quality/stress problem will always be there.GONNAFISTYA wrote:For the record, the average "gaming career" for devs is less than a decade (yes...it can break people and ruin lives).
There are loads, but they're basically all the same story, with mostly the same results: people leave the industry. Divorces, mental-breakdowns, people quitting the industry in disgust because of the pressure/stress and the long hours it demands...these things happen all the time and it's so common nobody blinks when it happens anymore.Deathshroud wrote:I'd love to hear some of these horror stories.GONNAFISTYA wrote:For the record, the average "gaming career" for devs is less than a decade (yes...it can break people and ruin lives).

I'll push back on testers if a bug report sounds improbable or like user error. But only an idiot wouldn't cherish having someone else to test shit for them. Testing is boring as shit. I don't know how they do it for a living.GONNAFISTYA wrote:LOL!!MKJ wrote:http://www.trenchescomic.com/

The VERY FIRST STORY is exactly why I'm not a huge fan of working with programmers.
(sorry to programmers who might take offence..but seriously...I'm not sorry I said it)
He's a programmer, not a designer. He was at the forefront of pretty much every single leap in graphics engine innovation. He is a huge lose to the gaming community.themuffinman wrote:About time... he did roughly jack-shit for id over the past decade. He's a relic who had his time, id needs someone with new ideas and innovation to push things forward.
