Whatever, change the focus to me if you need to...it's nothing new here. None of that changes the fact that the only reason you'd get excited about this is because it's something you already recognize made by a studio you already recognize.
The stupidity here is terminal.

Re: Games of Thrones - Telltale Games
GFY, I get your general point, but have you actually played TTG's Walking Dead? It's actually quite good and original despite it being based off of a comic.
IMO, I think it all depends on intent. Will the developer create this game just to milk the IP cash cow? Or will they actually put an effort into adapting an existing IP into a game worth playing? If this were a company like Activision or something, I would totally agree with your sentiment. TTG seems to put a lot more thought into their games and most of them turn out quite well, so I'd be interested in seeing what they have planned.

Re: Games of Thrones - Telltale Games
obsidian knows it.
Usually I agree with GKY's sentiments, but here it's almost like he's completely unfamiliar with TTG's previous work. They've pretty much always worked with existing IP before and most of the time were able to create something nice out of it, with an original take on that existing IP.
So yeah, the games industry rant is a viable one, but GKY is overstretching himself here, because I feel TTG is one developer to whom that rant shouldn't apply (at least, not as much).

Or you could stop blaming other people for your disgruntled demeanor and fix the problem yourself; only work on games you want to work on. Of all devs did that there wouldn't be any shit games anymore.GONNAFISTYA wrote:I've said it before I'll say it again: Stop buying shit games so that I don't have to continue working on more shit games. How many times do I have to say this? You blissfully retarded fucking cunts.
Oh no wait, then you wouldn't be able to pay your bills. So in the end, instead of hating everybody, you could say "thanks guys, for buying and liking these shit games so I don't have to flip burgers for a living".

Re: Games of Thrones - Telltale Games
So, my long post is as follows;
Games made on existing IPs are, for the most part, ways to make money via another branch of entertainment. All to often game execs see a TV program or a film is making billions and get the rights to chuck out some monstrosity of a game to earn a few bucks off the back of it. I would also guess that sometimes (GKY - can you confirm?) a studio will take up the mantle of making a game with an unrealistic time schedule just to keep them afloat and keep their staff paid. The people who are making the game could have zero interest in the game they are making, so that doesn't help either. But on the flip side, sometimes someone who cares about the IP and has the ability to make a good game picks up the mantle and decides to own it. This is what TTG has been doing for a number of years with various games based on various IPs - Sam & Max, Monkey Island, Back to the Future....
If someone has created a rich and beautiful world in books or comics and there is a wealth of high quality source material, then why not make a game about it? There is a reason that these things become popular, because they resonate with something inside a large amount of people. This is not a bad thing and it is not a reason to not make a game based on something existing. So Games of Thrones is being made which does have the aforementioned rich and beautiful world, lovingly crafted over years by George R R Martin which has enough content to support a high quality game. Also, Gearbox has recently given them permission to use the Borderlands IP to create Tales from the Borderlands. Borderlands is one of the best new IPs of the last decade so it should give you some confidence that it has been entrusted to TellTale to further the storylines.
Everything was original once but not everything original is good.

So I complied a list of games that are new IPs, have more than titled and are as good or better than Borderlands;
Portal
Assassins Creed
Uncharted
Bioshock
Care to add to the list?

Re: Games of Thrones - Telltale Games
It's ok to have confidence in a developer. I think what you're failing to realize is that TTG is a hired gun in this situation. I don't think it's far off to say that every developer with a pulse wants to work on "their own shit" and usually studios only seek "external IP" as a last resort to getting work to pay employees and keep the company going until they can work on their own stuff again. If you want to believe that TTG turns everything they touch into gold then I won't stop you. But I'd remind you that while they did well with one IP, there's no guarantee of anything for the next...especially when it's not their own baby. My favorite hockey team can win 3 games in a row and then go on a 3 game losing streak...shit happens is my point.Eraser wrote:obsidian knows it.

And I have to splash some more reality into this discussion, but it seems that all of you have forgotten that TTG doesn't own the IP...their masters do. If any of you haven't had to work with the owners of external IP all I'll say is that they want more control than you think. Sure...they'll trust the developer to "do their thing" but that rope is only so long. At the end of the day the owner of the IP has final say and can override good decisions with bad ones, which has happened more times than I care to remember. Ask any 3rd party developer who's ever worked with LucasArts and their heavy-handed management of their product and get back to me.
This game is "Product X" made by "Company Y" for "Franchise Z", just like when local beer companies "brew" foreign brands: it's someone's best guess on someone else's idea and never as good as it can be.
And people are getting excited about this day in day out due to brand recognition. Yay.

I work on the projects my boss tells me to work on. I can tell them my preference but they'll put me where they need me.
And please, in detail, explain to me how I can get the entire business approach of a global corporation with thousands of employees and a movie divsion to change the fact that every game they make shares massive amounts of gameplay mechanics with their star franchise with game difficulty made for the dumbest common denominator because millions of mouth-breathing idiots tell me to shut up when I tell them to stop buying the crap that's being peddled to them...all when the only goal of aforementioned global corporation is to make as much profit as possible.
I am sitting here now, telling you directly, to stop getting excited about the same things that have been strangling innovation and you're telling me to do something to fix it...and I'm sitting here now, telling you directly, to stop getting excited about the same things that have been strangling innovation.

I'm a level designer. I'm not a Lead Game Designer, nor a Producer or Creative Director. Those positions get more say in the final design of the game, but those are predominantly "management" positions with little hands-on work being done. I prefer the hands-on work, therefore I have not pursued those positions.seremtan wrote:so you have skills but no aspiration or ideas, which makes you 33% of this guy:GONNAFISTYA wrote:Stop buying shit games so that I don't have to continue working on more shit games. And since I'm never going to be a king maker of video games that will "rise up" and single-handedly change the way the industry chases profit, I fail to see why any of you stupid fucks would thrown this on my shoulders when it's the customer and their wallet that dictates which games are producted.
This entire forum is a bunch of fucking retards who take pissy pot shots at anyone trying to explain the problem to know-nothings.
This is fucking awesome and the reason I keep coming back.
Perhaps I'll make a phone thread?
Re: Games of Thrones - Telltale Games
If you wanted something else you could just look for another job. But you don't. So that either makes you a hypocrite or an armchair anarchist.
In the end you're having a first world problem. Oh no, my boss is throwing money at me at something I don't like to do.
Also, you're saying you alone can't rage against the machine but do demand the consumer (also individuals) to vote with their wallets...hmm.. so.. hypocrite then.

i presented Notch as an example of someone who escaped the fluorescent-lit world of corporate buttfuckery and created something himself, not because the consumers were demanding it, but because it's what he wanted to do. but hey, if a cubicle is all you can afford...

What part of "I don't want to be a business man who manages a business" don't you get? Level design is job where I spend all day playing with Lego, you want me to give that up to deal with running a business and dealing publishers and PR morons? Please. Sorry but I get to enjoy my job while saying fuck you to millions of people who won't listen anyways. I can like doing level design without liking the overall game. If you cannot comprehend that, sorry.
Like I said, I keep pointing out exactly why you people look stupid (by not accepting the fact that a single level designer cannot change the purchasing habits of millions of drones and that you instead want to make the topic about me) and you just keep doing the same things to look stupid.
lol you idiots...

So what we can conclude here is that Watch_Dogs is an uninspired piece-of-shit game. Thx for the headsup GKY

This thread in a nutshell:
Tard: OMG Games Of Thrones games!!!
Me: Don't be a consumer whore and get excited just because it's Game Of Thrones.
Tard: Nuh-uh shuddap...it may be good.
Me: Yeah it may be good but the point is don't be a consumer whore and get excited just because it's Game Of Thrones.
Tard: Well if you don't like us being consumer whores why don't you change then entire industry model to stop us tards from being consumer whores and getting excited just because it's Game Of Thrones?
Me: This isn't about me, it's about being consumer whores and getting excited just because it's Game Of Thrones.
Tard: Well if you don't like it why don't you just quit your job?
Me: It's not about me liking my job or not, it's about being consumer whores and getting excited just because it's Game Of Thrones.
Tard: Nuh-uh shuddap...
And on and on it goes...because stupid.

again, going back to the example I gave earlier: Notch doesn't run Mojang - he builds games, and lets some other chump be the CEO. also, Mojang has no publisher and does no marketingGONNAFISTYA wrote:What part of "I don't want to be a business man who manages a business" don't you get? actually, you're making yourself look stupid here. who says the only choices are to "change the purchasing habits of millions of drones" or suck the Man's dick every day? isn't there somewhere in between those two extremes?the fact that a single level designer cannot change the purchasing habits of millions of drones and that you instead want to make the topic about me) and you just keep doing the same things to look stupid.
but hey, it's your life. i don't really give a fuck. i'll just leave you to whine about consumers while you spend your days feeding their simpleminded appetite for shit videogames
