Stuff of importance should have been lost.

Try -50c.

Temperatures in the north and central US could feel as low as -51C (-60F) with the effect of wind chill, forecasters say.

I have to ask as I have never experienced such cold, does it take a day or two for the underground water/sewer services to freeze up?
I suspect earth is a good insulator and that it would take a little while for the cold to permeate*.
