Android tablets?

I think I may have connected my iPad to iTunes once or twice, way back when it was required for updates.

I get the extensibility vs. simplicity argument between Android and iPad tablets. My opinion on the matter is that it's a tablet, it can never be an analog for an actual computer, so why bother with worrying about extensibility? It's a toy for movies and a game of fluffybirdvszombies so keep it simple.

In my case I work in a domain environment and support the devices. Setting up the required infrastructure for either is daunting and quite annoying when you have to rely on 3rd party software like itunes to run updates/backups and shit like that. It's not really something most end users would have a problem with but as a tech it can be pretty annoying.

There's other crap with ipads I'm not a fan of but again it's because of what I want to do with it. Or rather not have to do to get it working the way I want.

That hasn't been true for a while now. I have never needed iTunes for anything with my iPad. Even putting files on it can be done using apps (I use FileBrowser, which can access Windows shares). Movie streaming can be done with AVPlayer (which plays MKV files just fine) or something similar. It is true that Android places less restrictions (or really none at all) on what files you can put where though.

My 2013 Nexus 7 is pretty awesome. Great high-res screen, great color reproduction, easy to handle due to it's size, and supports emulators. Love it.

Ok so it looks like it is a straight up fight between a Nexus 7 and an iPad air.

Key considerations - ease of playing mkv files, tablet size (screen and capacity), battery life, ease of use when it comes to adding and removing files (r3ts post has made me slightly excited by not having to use iTunes) and cost

I can't on my first gen Nexus 7, and a quick glance at the Google Nexus 7 site reveals that this is still the case unfortunately.
I'm not sure there are any tablets that come with decent expandability.

Well, the Surface Pro 2 has a full size USB 3.0 port and a microSDXC card reader, but it's also insanely expensive.
Very nice though. One of the guys at work bought one and seems to get on with it. He even uses it as a very capable laptop replacement.

I have a latest generation Nexus 7 and absolutely love it. I have the 32gb edition, and it's not even close to being full.

I have a Toshiba Thrive which is rooted. It has a full HDMI, USB port, Full SD card slot, and a user replaceable battery.

I bought my google nexus because I went travelling, threw a few dozen music albums on it, installed a handful of games, another 10-15 movies/tv shows & a shit ton of books. every time you arrive at a particular destination (eg your hotel) you unpin the music & pin some more (google music player), delete the films you've watched and [torrent] a few more on & continue your travels. Storage really isn't an issue, considering even the middle of butt-fuck nowhere has wifi these days, and your hard-drive is in the sky

Ok so with the latest version of VLC you can connect to the iPad via and IP address and drag and drop all sorts of media on to it, including MKVs and you can access them via the VLC player.

iPad takes the lead again...

Don't discount the importance of Android devices using the industry-standard micro USB for connectivity and charging. I can use the same charger for my Nexus 7, phone, Kobo and PS Vita.
All the guys I work with who use Apple devices are always scrounging around for Apple compatible chargers. And Apple chargers aren't even compatible between hardware revisions.

About 20 hours of flights all in all? Plus there will be other uses like train journeys and late night work entertainment
