Sorry you have had such bad experiences at CrossFit boxes dude, I assure you they are not all like the ones that you have encountered and trained at. Perhaps I am just lucky that the coaches I have had have compete at regional level and have many qualifications regarding fitness, diet, weight lifting and personal training. I understand not all boxes have this level of coaching staff and some places get away with using Level 1's as their sole method of training which is ill advised to say the least. And that rate is positively puny compared to sports like soccer, skiing, and football. Even running may be more dangerous. A 2010 study followed recreational runners for eight weeks as they trained for a 4-mile race. 30.1 injuries were reported for every 1,000 hours of running.
But regarding the "train til you puke" thing, that isn't exclusive to CrossFit. I have seen football players, rugby players, runners, weight lifters and swimmers all train until they puke. You call it stupidity others call it dedication to being the best they can be and also wanting to be the best at what they are doing.

Don I've never been to or performed a Crossfit session. Just hearing about all of the injuries and the training methods was enough discouraged my involvement. The people I've spoken with have the same high opinion of their "coaches" too. My coach competes in Crossfit competitions, my coach is a semi-pro MMA fighter, my coach is blah, blah, blah. But the real question is what schooling, training and experience does the so called coach have. And even if the owner or senior coach is qualified, that doesn't mean all of his assistants are. Furthermore, the training methods are prone to injury and the cult like mentality is bizarre.
Certainly I'm making generalized assertions about Crossfit. Not every Crossfit facility is going to be bad. I'm sure your coach and his/her staff are all experts. They would never allow anyone to perform exercises in an unsafe manor. Everyone at your Box (that just doesn't sound right) has had a thorough physical evaluation and is always conscious of their current physical conditioning. They would never workout or let a fellow Crossfitter workout to the point where fatigue could get them injured. I'm sure your Box, like everyone else's Box, is the best Box of them all. I wish you continued success with your endeavors and many injury free WODs.

Yes, we have set cycles at our box, so we will do a strength cycle or a metcon cycle for about 16 weeks. for instance, we establish a 1 rep max for different lifts in the first week; squats, presses, cleans, snatches, deadlifts etc etc then we scale back and do 3x5 at a chosen weight. Then every week we add 2.5kg to the weight for a number of weeks and then retest one RMs. Usual dramatic increases are shown (10/15 per cent increase in most cases. Some of the newbies will be considerably higher than that). The WODs then are programmed around what lifts we have done so it isn't stressing the parts of our bodies we have just smashed with lifts.

If I'm performing regimented exercises with the goals of building strength, lowering my body fat and increasing my over-all ability to perform cardiovascular related activities, am I training or working out? Now when I've reached those goals and continue the regimented exercises to maintain my condition, am I still training or working out?
It would seem to me that "training" would imply the regimented exercising was being done to improve one's ability to perform a specific activity not directly associated with the results of working out.

to me, training implies a disciplined approach with a specific goal of creating physiologic adaptations/refinement of motor skills. I'd say maintenance could be a form of training.
