Cyanogenmod really is great; my phone shipped with Gingerbread (with an official ICS but it was slow) but thanks to Cyanogenmod it now runs KitKat .

It does exist. Quite a few hands-on previews on various websites. It's just that these specs for this price and it not coming from Google (who can heavily subsidize their phones), it makes me wonder how they've managed it.

I guess your phone is so old it hasn't received Samsung's layer of suck.
The problem with recent Samsung phones is that the design is all over the place. They use different graphical styleguides in different parts of the phone, making it all look like a cobbled together mess rather than a single unified system. This is especially true for the Galaxy S5. And the way the UI on Samsung's own TouchWiz style apps are set up is just not very intuitive. Basic functionality can be found in places where you least expect it and often have labels or icons that differ from the usual visual or linguistic styles you're used to, so it's actually easy to overlook some functions at first.
On top of that, Samsung tends to pre-install mountains of unremovable apps no one has asked for. Finally, one just has to look at the backside of the S5 to understand how ugly that phone itself is.

Apple needs to re-invent the iPhone to remain succesful, sure, but Samsung really needs to do the same with their phones. They need to think about features that are useful to the end user rather than gimmicky stuff like a heartbeat sensor (that doesn't work) or a shoddy copy of Apple's fingerprint reader. They should also stop making their phones from all plastic.
If they'd pour as much money in R&D as they would in their marketing campaign, Samsung could make much better products. But at the moment, it really is their marketing that keeps them afloat.

I love touchwiz haters.

You can disable anything anymore which is basically uninstalling it. This goes for any OEM running anything beyond ICS (Which is every phone out).

OH GOD THE ICONS ARE UGLY. So Install a launcher? Basically every ASOP app is now available through the Play Store and if you're on a kitkat device you can install them all.

As much as I dislike samsung. The S5 is a solid device. And the waterproofing is no joke. I wouldnt go swimming with it on purpose but its pretty insane how long it can last under water.

Motorola is the only OEM currently thats "close" to a stock android exp and to be honest unless you get a Moto X or happen to be a verizon customer and can get one of the motos they have. You're basically stuck with a nexus, or a moto x if you want "stock android".

I've been carrying a LG G2 for quite a while. And even with all its "OH NO BROKEN STUFF" its been one of the best phones I've owned. I wouldnt trade it for a nexus and the only phone I've even considered swapping to is the moto x and I just cant get over how small it is plus I love wireless charging.

While im ranting about phones. The only company that did the finger print scanner right was motorola on the atrix.

What keeps apple afloat? I'd say its kept up by a product that WORKS with no fuss. They make the most solid usable smart phone available with the lowest return rate on every major US carrier. You can buy a charger, case, and accessories almost anywhere for them and they interface with fucking everything with a usb port anymore. TO be honest if they actually do release a 5 inch screen iPhone, I'll be jumping back on the apple wagon. Even the "BEST" android phones are "Second best" against the newest iPhones. Always has been, always will be. Samsungs the only OEM thats even close to compare and the android nerd babies dont like touchwiz. Funny enough, NORMAL CUSTOMERS like touchwiz. Fucking hate the fact I worked in wireless for so long. Phone nerds piss me off.
