Dark Souls 2

Post by Κracus »

Who's ready to die? Seems to be a lot of really good titles coming out of the woodwork this year.

I heard Dark Souls 2 is designed to "appeal to a wider audience", which probably means it's dumbed down, a lot easier and generally a lot less fun to play than it's predecessor.

I certainly haven't come to expect that type of stuff from those dev's... I'd be surprised if that was the case, and disappointed. I'm certainly still going to give it a shot given the sheer volume of games they've made that I absolutely love. There isn't anything From Software has made that I haven't liked so I'll hope for the best.

The graphics in the game are fine but this game was never about the graphics any more than Quake 3 is. The game is about gameplay and in that respect this game is amazing. Been playing it since it came out and I'm loving it.

Quake 3 was about the GFX when it was new.

Indeed. It was a Carmack product. Therefore, it was about the gfx by default.

I finished the game and it was excellent the whole way through, really have nothing bad to say about it. Getting titanfall later today me thinks.

Spent a minute wondering what was being censored there...

Bit weird, it's a perfectly normal word in any other sense ain't it. What's a man to do if he wants to tell us how there's a small asian man in his armor?

That's just how they roll those Mongols, always armored up on their little horses, holding their compound bows up in the air like they just don't care.

this game sucks. the gfx look like 2004, the npcs have no facial expression, a voice just emits out of their blank stare and no lip movement...the audio is bullshit (no footsteps) which sucks because for some reason it likes to spawn guys behind you who come up and fuck you in the b-hole. Oh and having giant fucking boulders randomly crush you when you walk through a door doesn't make the game "hard"..just makes it trial and error memory bullshit.

This game is all about how well you can run a gauntlet.

Right... Sounds like you're a little butt hurt shaft. The sounds are definitely there and frankly add a lot to the atmosphere of the game. There's definitely footsteps and although I don't recall a boulder coming through a door I do recall one in the forest of giants and if you listened carefully while walking down the obviously dangerous cave where you find it, it's pretty easy to avoid.

Also the gauntlet style of this game is no secret. I like it, plus they made it easier this time around by making the enemies finite.

In fact the only point you could viably argue is the graphics which I found cool but not really a selling point for this particular game.

Yeah no...they're there, just shit and not there when they don't want them to be. I like when you first start the game and you're walking through grass and the sound effect is some dude crumpling a Sunchip bag in front of a mic.

I know how the game works, I played a shitload of Demon Souls back in the day...maybe I'm just a bit disappointed nothing was improved or maybe I'm just getting too old for this tedium. fyi all i did was power through the start to get the soapstone and cat ring so I could coop. I don't know why they still have this convoluted bullshit coop system.

I went sorcerer because i figured it was closest to pyromancer. Time to build up my str so I can fight light a man.

You can still get a pyromancy flame later in the game. Not sure why they made it so you can't start the game as a pyromancer though. Probably cause Pyromancy is a little OP.

Sorcerers start the game fairly weak but by mid game they're easily the most powerful style of character you can use.

Also I agree with the grass sound effects, I actually thought that wasn't well done when I started the game but after that section I never noticed anything like that.

You should also sleep in the coffin that's in the "Things Betwixt" section of the game so that your character is more representative of your gaming style.

I only really use flame swath, I've killed people in pvp with it in one shot. Works great when they try to hide behind a pillar or wall.

If you like pvp yeah, iron keep isn't the best. Also you could try invading but you can't really complain if it's 3 vs 1 when you do. You're in their world after all. I joined the rat covenant, they're the best pvp covenant imho. Or you could join the bell bro's and reverse the roles and gank other people.

Memphis wrote:Ganking invaders is all well and good. What these chumps are doing is summoning via duel soapstones, with 3 mooks ready to clonk him.

Also, people who summon a shade only for them to walk through the boss-fog and the fucker's already dead. Dickheads. Shades should get Duty Fulfilled when this happens. If they're that scared of invaders, they just gotta put their sodding life protection ring on.
hehehe I did that. I didn't know! I beat the pursuer the first time I ran into him and didn't realize the fog wall lead to the pursuer's 2nd fight if you failed. So I summoned a guy then sent him back when I went through but how was I supposed to know on my first try!?

Just picked up Great Chaos Fireball (and boy, was getting that an absolute fuckfest). Yet to try it, but hoping it'll be of use.

Gotta laugh at all the bitching about soul memory. I love it tbh. Means those who rush through low level can't twink on their souls, without being matched with higher levelled, or more equally geared players. Sad pricks who like to get to a certain area level and dedicate play to invading and peen waving in ridiculously one-sided fights are mostly shunted away from the newer batches of players. Even if they do rush gear on minimal souls, it won't last them to farm low levels all day everyday with. Lol at the whining over it.

My only beef with SM is that I played with a friend the entire way through the game and it got difficult to play together after a while. It became easier once we reached 1 million SM though. Otherwise it works great.

The ring helps a lot but it doesn't ignore SM. The small white soapstone sign ignores way more SM than the large soapstone sign though.

do you play on xbox by chance?

The original Dark Souls is for free for Xbox 360 owners (I believe a gold subscription is not even needed) until the 15th of this month.

I downloaded it. Will try when I get around to it. To be honest, the game looks kind of 1990.

ok, so I played the original dark souls today and was pretty much disappointed by it. The game just feels so half arsed, as if it was released under a tight schedule and they didn't get to polishing it.

Seriously, what's up with the crappy menu system that only allows d-pad input? Why does everything look incredibly noisy, like they forgot to apply bi- or trilinear filtering? And what's up with the abysmal framerates? I just couldn't beat the first boss because the framerate dropped to like 15 fps. Probably a non-issue on PC, but the game is unplayable on Xbox 360.

And really, this wasn't just a difficulty level issue, even though part of the difficulty seems so artificially created by clunky movement, overly complex controls and rather lame traps that cannot be seen.

Sure, I know, I should stick in there and play a bit longer because I "don't get the game yet" (and I would, if it weren't for the shitty framerate) but while the game might open up to become something worthwhile, it's still a half assed implementation of a good idea.
