I pay less than €15 a month (which is about 20 dollar) for 300 minutes of calling and 500MB of data.

I have a group of friends that come over on Friday nights to play cards, I guess about 7 of us all together, and everyone is constantly looking at Facebook, or texting, or showing someone something on Youtube. Haven't you ever gone out with a group of people and everyone either at your table or nearby looks like this

Seriously, that is a problem with your friends, not smart phones.
I know people like that exist and they bug me as well, but when I'm hanging out with my friends, I'm hanging out with my friends and am actually socializing with them.

I'm not a heavy duty smartphone user either and I don't check my Facebook from minute to minute (nothing happens on there anyway) but I do find it darn convenient to have a smartphone. Especially having Google Maps in my pocket is a godsend from time to time.

That sounds decent. Someone above, maybe obsidian I'm too lazy to look, mentioned how our plans in the US kind of suck. This is true. And I live in a "city" where if I drive 15 minutes north or west, the cell service is awful for quite a distance.

My friends are douchebags, this is not a new concept. I don't mind FB, but I don't live on it. I could definitely see the usefulness of a smartphone. I went to Philadelphia back in November. Thankfully there's a Starbucks on every corner near Drexel and the Liberty Bell. I used their free WiFi for my tablet to find stuff to do. Smartphone would have definitely been convenient there.
