Has anyone here ever been a victim of identity theft or bank access or any of that shit? Seems like every other week there's a breach on some website that requires a password change. Not even sure it's worth fucking with anymore. Does it ever amount to much?

xer0s, identity theft is commonplace, certainly more so than any company would care to admit. What I'm surprised about is that I haven't heard of very many class action lawsuits against companies for losing a large amount of unencrypted personal data.

I don't even think it matters anymore if your password is "password" or "1234". Brute force password breaking for each account is pretty pointless when it's so much easier to hack into a server and steal a database of all the unencrypted data. As far as I'm concerned, there are two ways to reduce identity theft: for companies to actually secure their data, and for you to not use their services in the first place.

I've seen it yeah. Mostly used to access the users e-mail to spam fishing scams to people in their contacts.

once, years ago. bank refunded me the money, and imposed a ridiculously large overdraft limit (because the amount that got taken took me into the red, and they needed to square that somehow) which i've never used

nice try, Santander

I once had my credit card used in some obscure European country. My bank (NatWest) called me within 15 minutes and cancelled the transaction . They didn't think my card was cloned but someone had just just randomly generated my details.

Santander refused me a 123 current account the other week >:(, my credit rating should be perfect. I was only going to open the account to take advantage of their generous 3% interest offer, I think they gathered that.

Also, short of trying to keep this under the radar why haven't eBay force reset everyone's passwords?

If I remember correctly, the EU is working on laws that force companies to inform customers if private info was stolen. That's a good thing IMO. I think hacks are done far more often than companies admit.

Pretty much the same thing happened to me. It could've been worse, so meh.

Yes, once also. My credit card was used to buy a couple of coffees in a USA airport terminal and shortly afterwards some airline tickets.

The bank called my mobile on a Sunday to check. I guess the coffee transactions were to check if (the card) worked then they were off literally. Close call I guess

I think part of the reason they're so quick to deal with credit card fraud is it's their money that's stolen (i.e., your credit).

People I know have had their debit card details stolen and it can take a month or two to get things resolved because it's not the banks' money that's been stolen so they're not as bothered.

Always use a credit card folks .

Changed mine earlier this week when I heard about this. Just got the email from Ebay today. Yeah, thanks for the heads up Ebay. :dork:

And apparently I bought a generator in the UK a few years ago for $750. Bank took care of it rather quickly and even gave me cash to cover the lost money until it was resolved.

With all the reward they offer, I don't know why anyone wouldn't use a credit card. I use mine for literally everything. I rack up a shit load of points and usually have enough to get a couple free plane tickets every year and some left over. I even use my card for work and expense it back to the company, but I reap the bonus points. You'd be an idiot not to use a credit card for everything...

...unless you're poor, in which case you would get raped by interest and debt.

Thankfully I don't think anyone here is that poor. Well, Gramps since his wife took everything when she left... and maybe SoM. Oh... and BKB... do you still have that hole in your roof brah?

From what I understand, CC companies spend a huge amount of money fighting fraud. In America at least, that cost doesn't yet outweigh the cost of switching over to the smart card system, so we're stuck with decades-old RFID tech in our cards. As a result, a third of Americans have had a fraud problem in the last few years. So we pay for it with obscene loan-shark-level interest charges. Gotta love monopolies! :miffed:

Oh, do you not have chip-and-pin in the US? We've had it here for quite a while. The only problem is the criminals are getting smart and start affixing cameras above ATMs to capture people's PINs, or for the smart people who cover their PINs they've started putting a membrane over the keypad to capture peoples touches >:(.

I read an article that said chip-and-pin will be fully implemented by '17 or '18, not sure which. They only just started earlier this year. :(
