Yeah, he fell off his quad and suffered severe brain injuries. He wasn't quite right after that, but gradually got back into acting. I did a lot of support work for the post house who edited his early Noughties kid's movies, and the word was that he was easing his way back into things.
There were rumours of amnesia, but I'm not sure how true these were.

Never got to meet the man unfortunately. Shame; I have massively fond memories of the Young Ones. He was a comedy great.

Not only that, people have been inter-laughing at quotes of his from TV series he's played in, which should give you a more than clear impression of their opinion of Rik Mayall. He's known in Europe. European people are laughing at him. However, his quotes aren't remotely LOL funny. At best they get a smirk. Very little English/European humor makes that global transition. But that doesn't make ME narrow minded. It means that brand of humor has a narrow appeal. Deal with it, dummy. It's likely he's really funny to stupid people. Laugh away.
