Coffee Machines. Got one? Tell us about it please.

Post by Whiskey 7 »

We are looking to buy a coffee machine., replacing the instant coffee habit and been reading a lot but now value your personal experiences to compliment investigations.

We figure filtered coffee has had its day and it is a move to pod or the semi professional/barista made brews..

We are leaning toward the pod variety for the swift and simple, no fuss operation and are prepared to invest into mid to high class equipment, prefer brand names.

The only concern is to pod compatibility, in that brand X does work in brand Y but brand Y not in brand X machines etc. and that some brands onlytake/fit their make of pod.

What say you?

Just buy something that does Kcups and get those "fill your own Kcup" things.

Or buy a 9.99 coffee pot. Fuck this isnt hard.

Nespresso is about half a step up from Senseo.
If you want decent coffee you need to get yourself a piston.
I have a Rancilio Silvia myself. Takes a bit of maintenance but it makes great espressos and cappuccinos

No Im serious. Unless you're making special fancy coffee, A 9.99 coffee maker is going to brew the same coffee a 99.99 coffee maker will. The only difference is if you want the ability to kcup and do weird shit single cup at a time. and even then its really worthless.

Just go buy a 10-40$ Coffee maker that matches your kitchen and move the fuck on.

If you want really good coffee get a real espresso machine - the good ones are expensive as fuck but worth it.

True, as they'll both make horrible coffee.

True enough, as long as you're talking about machines. A perculator or a french press (had to look that one up, didn't know the proper english term for ir) makes a fine cup as well, just different. I have like 5 different coffee devices and use them all, depending on what i'm in the mood for. The espresso machine wins taste wise - but it's a bit of work cleaning it, don't always have the time for it.

In any case, if you're going to get a decent machine you'll want a proper bean grinder as well as a good adress for proper coffee. Not really worth the investment otherwise.

bean grinders are overrated and/or take extra maintenance. if you have a good address for proper coffee they probably have a better bean grinder you'd ever buy. they can usually grind it to fit your particular machine, too.

That's true - but i have a rather good one, coffee is quite important to me :) Coffee stays tastier for longer in bean form too.

PS since when do you drink coffee sir? I seem to recall you hating the stuff :smirk:

:smirk: Don't think we are at the coffee bean grinder point just yet, hey, but once you have visited a real coffee wholesaler that does offer samples, the smell (aroma) is to die for, hence the foray into coffee machines.

Still thinking here, the pod solution is bu the first stop on the adventure, so keep your experience coming as I am off to dinner at a local restaurant :)

Why? A grinder is stupid cheap. If you "love coffee" and want "the best coffee" you're an idiot if you dont at least have a 20$ grinder.

I'd even say you're beyond an idiot. Its so cheap its not even worth bitching about.

Ah, yes - never tried the freezer actually, will have to give that a go some time.

And oh god vendingmachine coffee... the stuff we have at work is just an insult - vile watery brown liquid from some kind of chemical powder. Doesn't stop some people from drinking it all day, unbelievable.

Its the same shit as freezing anything else. It keeps longer but its not "Fresh" no matter how soon you freeze the shit.

is the scientist included, or do you have to provide your own?

ffs Whiskey you don't need a machine. just get a Bialetti moka pot (probably $30), and if you have to be a fag about it, grind the beans yourself

Funnily, I've just been through all this and ended up with this conclusion:
Do you want easy or authentic?

Easy, get a pod based one, but if you like cappuccino, get a separate milk foamer which foams proper milk. Powdered milk in the pods is nasty.

Authentic, bean to cup, most likely Gaggia branded.

In the end, I wanted to test how often she'd use it before going all out on a Gaggia, so I got a Tassimo. It's a general purpose hot drinks machine which does pretty good coffee. Disappointed with the cappuccino experience, but that's where I recommend a true milk frother like the Aeroccino which is paired with Nespresso machines.

How good are Moka Pots compared to Nespresso's etc? I was thinking of buying a cheap one to see.

We have a Nespresso at work at whilst it makes nice coffee, the PODs seem quite a rip-off.
