Don't want to put a damper on you fellows good will but. Last year as an example this foundation gave out only 34% of the money they took in. The rest goes for salaries, expenses and paying professional fund raising companies.
In 2013 they took in 19,690,252.00 and gave out 6,843,097. I think thats about 34%. So about 34 cents of every dollar is actually doing something, the rest is buying big houses, cars, vacations, insurance etc.

It's a bit of playful campaigning, making this thing go viral. It's exactly because of people doing something relatively lame as throwing a bucket of ice over their heads that this thing is spreading.

Taking a bucket with ice and throwing it on your head is something anyone can do. Having a convincing talk about ALS is not something just anyone can do, especially not, because as you said, many people probably don't even know a lot about the disease.

Thing is, with this ice bucket challenge thing, not knowing much about ALS doesn't really matter. It's not to educate people, it's to spread awareness. Education comes next. Sure, 99% will have forgotten about this whole ice bucket thing in a month time, but pretty much every one of them has donated and will know about ALS' existence now. That last 1% might just be triggered into doing something more.
