can we talk about EDL? what's the story?
can we talk about EDL? what's the story?
for those who don't know:
The English Defence League (EDL) is a far-right street protest movement which focuses on opposition to what it considers to be a spread of Islamism and Sharia in the United Kingdom. The EDL has been described as Islamophobic...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_Defence_League
From the outside looking in, it looks like a bunch of 2nd grade citizens generally so angry at their current state that they'd uprise against anything at this point, so they can have an outlet for their (possibly) self inflicted way of life.
On the other hand, when I as much as hear anything related to Sharian law I lose my cool. From what I understand Sarian law is allowed to (or soon will) be taught to Islamic children in france. The idea of such barbaric ideals infiltrating the heart of modern culture / society makes me want to nuke shit from orbit.
So how do normal brits feel about this subject?

Re: can we talk about EDL? what's the story?
The EDL are just a bunch of footie hooligans that's pretty common across most of Europe and probably the world (see the Italian 'ultras').
They might think they've elevated themselves above the 'hooligan' stereotype with a political movement but don't let it fool you, since the football leagues have started stamping this shite out in the late 1980s they've needed to find new ways of showing their distaste for anything that isn't local whilst trying to provoke a fight. Most of its members come from the old and current firms that are associated with Brittish football clubs, in the 80s they would team up and fight clubs across Europe when they weren't trying to kick each others heads in during domestic competitions.
They're just the arseholes from the arse end of society who before could use football as a stage to be arseholes.

You don't agree with two forms of extremism. How surprising.Tsakali wrote:for those who don't know:

Re: can we talk about EDL? what's the story?
well, I didn't necessarily know EDL were extremists. For all I knew , the general public felt the same, but remained in the closet.... which is probably not far from the truth to some extend.Eraser wrote: You don't agree with two forms of extremism. How surprising.
Re: can we talk about EDL? what's the story?
err, clue's in the name...
Re: can we talk about EDL? what's the story?
Just consider parties like these the European equivalent of the Tea Party; a bunch of angry, xenophobic, privileged white folks with extreme political leanings because of stupid. At least here they don't carry rifles though.Tsakali wrote:well, I didn't necessarily know EDL were extremists. They're definitely not a majority in any Euro country, not even close. But they make a lot of noise for their size and the media understandably tends to focus on them. And at certain times some of these parties actually manage to get enough votes to severely disrupt the political status quo. Not in any kind of constructive way mind, which is why one shouldn't worry about them too much - when they're given actual power these populist parties tend to implode in an entertaining way. They're far better at negativity and deconstruction, seems to be in their nature to be opposition parties.
And this is utter bullshit as far as i know. The Frenchies would never stand for it, they hold their republican values very dear indeed.Tsakali wrote:From what I understand Sarian law is allowed to (or soon will) be taught to Islamic children in france.

Re: can we talk about EDL? what's the story?
That's what I thought about the frenchies, usually they're more inclined to kick off over anything than the Brits and the Brits wouldn't stand for that.

Re: can we talk about EDL? what's the story?
i'm still waiting for you to tell us why you're even asking. EDL are old news, and were just fringe faggotry even when they were being talked aboutTsakali wrote:well, I didn't necessarily know EDL were extremists. Re: can we talk about EDL? what's the story?
I downloaded a random brit show, and it was all about EDL members. the show is shit, but it was the first time I was exposed to the subject, so was curious to get an opinion from the ground floor.
