sounds like you have a small monitor. On a proper large monitor most sites have just dead space. very few are taking advantage.. and those who do, are mostly doing it wrong. there's a reason why newspaper pages are sectioned out into columns, eye fatigue etc. images, maps, and some other specific uses on the other hand, are quite nice.
