Dual channel DDR question

Post by Guest »

Currently I have an Asus A7N8X with a 2000+ athlon xp on it and 2x256mb ddr266 ram sticks running in single channel. I'm looking to buy a 512mb ram stick so that I'd have 1 gig of ram total, I'm wondering if I should look for a dual channel 512mb stick or how the hell does that work anyway?

to run dual, you need two of the same sticks.. so 2X512 will give you a gig dual channel.

Can I run 2x256mb? Do they have to be specified as dual channel?

Dual channel works if two sticks of RAM are in the correct slots and are same speced, meaning size, speed, and latencies I believe.
Now as long as RAM follows those specs and are in the correct spots they should become dual channel.

I would check to make sure the RAM sticks are in the same color slots and look in your BIOS for options

Ok, my motherboard has 2 blue ram slots and 1 black ram slot, so I moved one stick into the blue slot, since the other one was already in a blue slot, booted, BIOS shows that its running in dual channel mode. Timedemo'd quake 3:

Before: 173fps
After: 177fps
