Dunno what the law says in the UK, but here in the Netherlands there are pretty strict rules around tinted windows. Your windows need to pass at least 55% of the light. Since most stock windows are at a 75% level, you'll imagine that what most people consider to be "cool" tinted windows allow less than 55% of the light to pass.

Yeah definitely. I think they're 35% tint on the Cayenne. That's what they are on the car I have now.

yes, tinted windows are great.
only downside is people can't see your hand gestures anymore - I like being polite in traffic and give thank you waves et al.
Flash your hazard lights once or twice.

Because it's illegal. In Canada (Ontario specifically) the legal limit is 35% front and 23% rear. Reputable installers will allow 23% on the front but they're obligated to say you might get pulled over by a cop who wants to be a dick. The only thing you're allowed to do for the windshield is a sun strip. I have premium charcoal and love it. Privacy at all times and keeps your car from getting too hot on sunny summer days.

I've seen retards in the Mazda community going as low as 17, 10 or even 5% on their rear windows and then complaining about not being able to reverse at night :dork:

Is it actually illegal though? There's loads of companies in the uk who'll tint your windows up to 55 front side and rear side. I was going to get it done on a car a few year ago, and the place I was going to get it at was a brick and mortar business. Question of legality never came up.

That being said, maybe it's illegal for a company to supply the car, but not for another to do it aftermarket.

If 55% of the light passes it's no problem legally speaking (here in NL at least, but I think those are European rules). Rear window can be completely blinded as long as you have a right wing mirror. Otherwise a fully loaded van, a car with caravan or an 18-wheeler would've been illegal as well :)

All that really matters is whether or not the officer's view of the driver and seat belt is obscured. From Ontario's Highway Traffic Act:
73(3) No person shall drive on a highway a motor vehicle on which the surface of the windshield or of any window to the direct left or right of the driver’s seat has been coated with any coloured spray or other coloured or reflective material that substantially obscures the interior of the motor vehicle when viewed from outside the motor vehicle
Nothing about grade or percentage values, so 35% is used as a 'safe zone' guideline. The rear is a free-for-all, but if you get into an accident and it's established that your tints impaired your vision, you're cooked. Also, widely mismatching tints look stupid.

Sorry Mazda, sys0p lives in the UK. Your law texts mean nothing to him.

Also, funny how in paranoid America it's about being able to see the interior of the car (most likely to determine the skin color of the driver) whereas in Europe, outside to inside view doesn't matter at all, it's only about what the driver can see.

Do you drive often? I don't think we need to argue the merits of being able to see what direction other drivers are looking while driving their car. Also, those are Ontario's tint laws. The laws here differ by state. For instance, New Mexico allows 20% and New York allows 70%.

When i was in Korea 2 years ago we rented a car with tinted windows because well, all the cars there have them. Don't know what % or anything but it was a bit of a novelty to us. We found that driving at night especially was simply more dangerous, you just don't see as well. So we tried that a few times and then decided to avoid it.

Funny thing is that the Koreans thought that tinted windows was no problem whatsoever safety wise, but driving 100 km/h on the highway was something they thought was really fucking fast. We were like, err ok then.

The front windscreen must let at least 75% of light through and the front side windows must let at least 70% of light through.

Probably not worth it then.

Cograts, Gooff.

My car is tinted 5% sides and back with a 5% strip on the top of the windshield. The rest of the front windshield is 55%. It is considerably darker than the average vehicle, but easy to drive at night.

how did this thread about Geoff's desperate and all-too-late attempts to acquire a third-class community college education and vital job skills at the insistence of his breadwinning wife turn into a discussion about tinted windows?
