Why are video games any different than any other past time that people take off of work to enjoy?

Picture TNF telling the principle of his school that he's going to miss a day to play a video game on it's release day.

Now you explain the difference.

Transient nailed it. Have you ever taken a day off to go fishing? Or do anything you just plain enjoy? Don't be a douche. There's no difference whatsoever.

If you say so.

When was the last time you took a day off for a video game release?

It's not really the taking time off. It's the reason for doing so.

Gramps doesn't take vacations. He takes his days off to fix his shitbox house, fuck the kid and beat his wife into last week.

It's all about priority I guess.

Well gramps you probably missed the part where tnf said he had vacation days that he HAD to take...which usually indicates the man hasn't taken many days off. And the fact that he didn't want to miss his meeting should have indicated to you that you need to read sentences better and shouldn't take issue with his priorties.

Not really. I read and understood. But I still question an adult's desire to take a day off for a video game release.

Hey, it may just be me. Feel free to keep arguing your point.

I'm reading this from a guy who hosts lan parties? I can honestly say I've never been to one of those, but the idea of a bunch of grown men in a room with their computers and headphones and odor and videogames? Please. I have vacation leave to use up. I don't fish. I can't golf at the moment. If I don't use the days by June they are gone.

In any case, that has to be one of the most hypocritical points you've tried to make here considering your affection for the video game.

I could let it get really sad, though, and maybe put a sig up that tracks my stats or something like that...don't think I'll let a game go to my head like that though...I am an adult, after all.

I was hoping my reply wouldn't derail the thread, but alas, I was merely the first person to say anything.

Anyway, back to GTA 4.
The IGN review mentioned the significant immersion in the game. I can remember getting lost in Vice City to an extent, trying to collect cool cars for my garage or driving around while obeying the rules of the road and listening to the radio DJs. If GTA 4 is as gritty and realistic as they say it is, I think getting lost in the world could take bread crumbs for me to find my way back. I can only hope.

You truly aren't very intelligent. You place more worth on YOUR chosen reasons for taking time off. I wouldn't take a day off to go to a square dancing festival, but I wouldn't think less of someone that did. For fuck's sake, what manner of retard wage slave are you? Stop being so fucking obtuse.

I took time off work last Friday/Monday, so I could have a 4 day weekend in Majorca. Was fucking bliss.

But I too have some holiday time spare, and I would gladly sit on my arse and play games all day using it up, simply because sometimes its just nice to chillax.

To me, taking a day off for a game you've been looking forward to is no different from taking a day off to paint your house yellow or visit a hair replanting clinic.

I'm glad to see you've all had the chance to have a good cry.

The fact that you couldn't go to your boss and tell him/her your reason for missing the day without them losing a little respect for you, is my only point. I'm not saying that playing a video game or doing anything else on your day off is wrong. Hell, I've picked up a game on release day, and I've sat around on my ass on a day off and played video games. But I've never felt the need to stand in line over night to get the first copy of a game or see the first showing of a movie. Both of which fall into the same catagory as taking a day off for the sole purpose of playing a video game on release day. Sorry, my priorities are different.

TNF: The LAN parties were planned months in advance, so that everyone could plan them into their schedules. I never missed work to participate.

That's because you're a mong who doesn't get the point, Gwamps; your LAN parties show every bit as much commitment to video games as taking the day off to play. That's what vacation is for, and any boss worth his salt wouldn't lose respect for an employee doing whatever the fuck they want with their vacation time. That's why it's their vacation time.

Long story short, please just shut the fuck up and stop trying to sound like the old and boring individual you truly are. Please. :( Especially here. This is a thread of the celebration of video games, we're not celebrating the 1930s work ethic.

You organised a gathering of adult men to play said video games. You also painted your 'gaming beast' bright yellow. You question what now?

Vacation = planned time off. Usually preceded by some sort of notice to the employer. So taking an unplanned vaction day is a bit different.

I never said that there was anything wrong with adults playing video games.

Your LAN party theory is bunk, your vaction theory is bunk and your fucking loser outlook on professional resposibility is bunk.

What the fuck does it have to do with your employer what you do in your vacation time? Either you're as thick as cement or you work in some shithole like 'Cleetus and Bob's Septic Cleaners'.

Hey retard. Can you read? Do you have a job?

Vaction time, even though spent doing personal things, is planned time off that is coordinate with your employer. You don't have to tell your boss where you're going or what you are doing. But when you are using that very same vacation time to take unplanned time off, you usually have to explain your absence. Now that we've established how vaction time works, lets move on to my actual point... To be an adult and consider taking unplanned time off to play a video game on release day as a vaild/resposible reason to miss work, is unprofessional. That says you are willing to cause your boss/company the extra arrgavation that it takes to plan around your unplanned absence, all because you want to play a video game first.
