I think balance implies a wide range of weapon function, ability, and power. In a close battle, a SSG is probably more powerful and useful than a LG. At medium range, a LG may be better than a RG. At long range, a RG would be preferably to an RL. All of the weapons have their own unique functionality, pros, and cons.

If one or two weapons tend to dominate the game, the weapons become unbalanced to the dominant ones - the Rocket Launcher for example dominated Doom 3. However, in Quake 4, I don't feel as vulnerable without a Rocket Launcher or as needy to have one.
Exactly, but to say that it "doesn't matter what weap youre holding or what the approaching enemy is holding" doesnt strike me as balanced with each weapon having a niche, if the quote were true then all weapons would be balanced by all being just as good in any situation which is, and should be, untrue.

The Q3 SG does 110 damage as well but its spread is greater, it seems.

people also need to stop complaining about Orange and Green. the colors are no less arbitrary as Red and Blue - better yet, this time around theres even a reason for them to be orange and green.
theyre also on opposite sides of the spectrum, much like red and blue, so theres hardly a chance someone confuses the two.

if could be black and white and it would still be good. but no, it falls into the "its not quake"-columns :dork:

Not really, it's more the issue that they're not easily visible than the actual colors.

If they were BRIGHT orange and green, for instance, there wouldn't be nearly as many complaints about it.
