Well, a couple of quick facts -
- 3DRealms has said that something like 84% of the people who bought UT2K4 never went online.....and it was a MP only game.
- Unless you self distribute (Valve/Steam), publishers foot the bill for development and pay the developer, and in return get's a product at a certain date. If that date passes, the can be HUGH financial penalties to the royalties that the developer gets.
Although Q4 was far from perfect, the nay-sayers are mostly blowing smoke. Not perfect, but not worthless either. Given that Q3's performance was iffy on release due to hardward requirements, such is the life with Q4 and other leading edge games. It's the nature of the beast. And if people are expecting to get max detail and performance on anything less than leading edge hardware, they are kidding themselves. That has been the nature of pretty much over id title.

They also said DNF would be out in 1998, and then in 2001.

Oops...thanks for the correction!
But still, although most people discussing this stuff in internet forums lean toward online play does not mean that they make the majority of the community.
Quake 2 was the biggest seller in the Quake line....so that's one reason why Quake 4 wasn't MP only like Q3.

Q3 wasn't and isn't MP only since it has bots that can keep you busy for quite a while. Tim Willits didn't mention that the lack of a SP campaign was one of the reasons why Q3 sales were so low compared to the competition. It was the high system requirements and the not so noob-friendly gameplay that he blamed.
