Before if I left and came back later, unless a topic was replied to, it was read.

Annoyance. (unless I missed it in the preferences)

what browser are you using? other than the drop down, and the bar below the posts, i'm not seeing the issues you mentioned.

i checked IE7 and firefox and yes that seems to be fine
apparently the style is so broken in opera that the quick-reply box is even gone.

Sadly I have to manually click mark forums read.
