I don't think that the mac will be without its problems or issues and it's not like I'm throwing the PC away. I needed a dedicated machine for my photography work, the display on this thing will be quite nice for that. And the benchmarks I've seen for the quad core are pretty good.
Keep in mind that colors on the Mac will look different than the PC.
That was something that struck me with my Macbook. Photo editing done on the Mac turned out looking bad when I opened the files on my PC and printed them.
I've always found the opposite to be true. Everything I've edited in Windows CS looks horribly underexposed and flat in OS X.

lol, one thing about the displays on mac... they are awful for colour proofing.
TNF, got yourself a xrite i1 display or a colour monkey (get the monkey if you want to profile your printer). it's a wise investment if you're going pro.
if you are profiling your printer make sure you only use CS5 in 10.6.x as there's a colour engine conflict with CS4 and 10.6 which is corrected in CS5. Basically CS4 was a massive fail for Adobe and they didn't concentrate on fixing many of the bugs, they just pushed to get CS5 out.
Once you get a profiler/calibrater look up soft proofing in CS5. can be handy if your screen is somewhere near OK.

That was my point. Not that one is necessarily better than the other (although I've heard Doombrain's points echoed by other people), but that they are different. Whichever you use to edit, the pics will look shitty if you open them on a different machine.

since imac. too bright, clipping, poor gamut etc.
OK for web stuff though.
edit: outer frame is sRGB, inner frame is a profile i made a few days ago for my MBP.

oh ok. cause last i checked macs were the industry standard in the dtp business.
last time i had anything to do with dtp was many years ago tho so that makes sense.

couldn't just get the apple cinema display? or a big ol' dell ultrasharp?

Well, those are $1000-1100 respectively. iMac 27" with an i7 is about $2200, that leaves about $1200 in the bank. I paid $1600 (CND) for an i7 desktop (no monitor) and I was reusing a bunch of components from my current desktop (HDD/optical/case/cables). Besides, he said that he "wanted to streamline [his] desk and work area".
Not too shabby, IMO (unless you're a fanboi).

Yea if I were to build another PC with one of those displays, the i7, a decent video card, whatever, I'd be around the same price I paid for the mac.
The whole discussion is a bit like bringing up religion or politics with people. And its a non-issue for me that this this has "all the computing power" without the gaming benefits being that I won't be using it at any time for gaming and still have a PC I can game with if necessary (at medium detail levels). It has a great display, its fast, and it will do exactly what I need it to do extremely well.

About Snow Leopard Graphics Update
The Snow Leopard Graphics Update contains stability and performance fixes for graphics applications and games, including fixes that:
- address frame rate issues occurring in Portal and Team Fortress 2 on certain Macs
- resolve an issue that could cause Aperture 3 or StarCraft II to unexpectedly quit or become unresponsive
Give it a try, I'm interested if you guys notice any better performance.

read about the Steam update. I figured it was a Valve patch rather than an OSX patch
lets see if SC2 runs better now :[

It showed up today. It blazes right along with image editing - I'm using a trial copy of Aperture 3 for now. Another photographer told me that if I call Adobe customer service and tell them I switched platforms they will de-activate my licenses for my PC versions of Photoshop CS4 and Lightroom 3 and let me download mac versions (I downloaded both from the Adobe store in the first place - they give awesome educator discounts).
Not sure if Adobe will do this - I know they have to let you re-download your software in case you have hardware problems - I hope they'll let me transfer the licenses to Mac versions. I'm not very optimistic about it - but the computer is great so far regardless.

Good, now you have a mac you need to start referring to Apple the company as "MAC" and Steve Jobs as "The geniuses in Cuppertino!" (exclamation mark required regardless of sentence punctuation)

I know that Lightroom's license is the same for both PC and Mac. You can install it on two computers provided that they are not being used simultaneously.
Subject to the important restrictions set forth in Section 2.5, the primary user of the Computer on which the Software is installed under Section 2.1 (“Primary User”) may install a second copy of the Software for his or her exclusive use on either a portable Computer or a Computer located at his or her home, provided that the Software on the portable or home Computer is not used at the same time as the Software on the primary Computer. You may be required to contact Adobe in order to make a second copy.

Photoshop is different. For Photoshop, transferring the license may be a bit tricky, they'll have to issue you a new key and I don't know if they will allow that. There is this:
I called the Adobe store and after I faxed them my signed agreement that I would no longer use my PC version and paid them $25 they sent me a full boxed Mac version of my Master Suite CS3. Very easy and fast.

No, because it doesn't turn into Macimus Prime and smash the hell out of Spambots.

Odd that despite my comments everyone thinks I had this delusion of the Mac being the embodiment of computing perfection.
But its already shown that it will be nicer to work with than my PC was for photography, the monitor is incredible, and its fast as hell. I like the little things like being able to change color space in my display properties and that it recognized all my raw files and could open them in finder.
I've only used it for a day and while I've found some things I don't care for, overall its been great. The real test will be to see how it runs the windows version of photoshop CS4 in a virtual box based image of my PC. Or maybe if it will run it. That isn't my long term plan for using photoshop either. Adobe wouldn't transfer the CS4 license - but I can buy CS5 for $199 with my discount so I might just do that.

you can probably get CS4 to work using Wine.
much faster than Parallels.
