do what Mazda said. it's not that difficult. I don't know what trans is smoking. I get a reboot required maybe once a month. Last Tuesday update was one. what kind of fucked up settings do you have that a ballon tip would take window focus.

Oh, I manually install them. That was one of the first things I changed when I got Windows 7. I didn't know that updates came out weekly like that, but knowing that now, I'd guess that once every Tues/Wed I have to reboot, maybe once every other week here and there. And the prompt to reboot isn't a balloon tip, it's a small window in the bottom right (where balloon tips would go) that pops up, but it doesn't show up in the taskbar. And it doesn't always take focus, oddly. I'm going to try what obs said, thanks mang.

And I won't know how good this bowl I'm smoking is for another minute or two.

Of course anyone with half a brain will have Windows configured to only install the updates when you want them to. On my system, Windows downloads the updates in the background and offers me an additional shut down option which allows me to not just shut down, but also install updates before actually shutting down.

To be honest, I never understood the reasoning behind leaving one's computer on 24/7 when it's using electricity for doing basically nothing.

I don't get a prompt. For me my shutdown options just change into this:

Clicking the left option with the ! icon on top of it installs updates and then automatically shuts down my computer.

Well how the hell do I change it, so I'm not part of the retarded majority? Windows can't find gpedit.msc

Windows update used to fuck around terribly on my PC, refusing to update certain files and giving me exotic new error messages each time so that i couldn't pinpoint the problem. It would then scream about how they were actually critical updates and the world would explode if i didn't take immediate action.

The only simple low tech solution i could find with google was formatting the PC, and i gotta say, ever since i did that everything runs super smoothly.

Start > Type "Windows Update" > Change settings > Change the drop down menu to whatever you want.

I've used automatic updates for years on my own systems and on networks I've run and, in that time, I've seen one issue. Just one. I can understand not updating drivers unless needed, but OS updates (especially security updates) are generally put out for a good reason. MS generally rolls them out once a month on patch Tues so its easy to plan around and should only require one or two reboots a month.

The temp profile error is usually related to a corrupted profile. Here's how to create a new profile and move your data over to it:

1. Create a new secondary admin profile if you don't already have one.
2. Reboot then log on to the secondary profile.
3. Go to C:\Users and look for the folder with the same name as your borked profile
4. Rename that folder to whatever you want. Don't delete it if you want to avoid losing the settings and data from it.
5. Open regedit then go to: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList.
6. Delete the subfolder which houses the reference to the username with the borked profile.
7. Reboot.
8. Log on with the old profile (this creates a new local copy of that profile).
9. Reboot (last time, honest).
10. Log on to the secondary profile again and go back to C:\users
11. Copy the App data, Desktop, Favorites, Documents, Pictures, and Music folders out of the folder you renamed into the the folder for your original username (the one that was corrupted). Done.

Yeah, there's nothing there about the reboot prompt. Everything else is as I want it, working fine. It's jsut that prompt that I want gone.

Do you have Windows 7 Home? gpedit.msc is only available in Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate.

I'd like the prompt gone for the odd times when I get distracted and have updates going in the background while watching a movie or whatever. Even if I plan on shutting down, it doesn't mean I always get to it right away. Then there's the rare 2-reboots-in-one occasions when more than 1 update requires a reboot. Minor quibbles, but irksome nonetheless. It's annoying, but not something I'm about to spend a few hours trying to fix. Don't let my first post mislead you; I tend to exaggerate if you haven't noticed by now.

If you're up I can fix your PC for you... It's a windows profile issue. In the registry you'll find a hex key entry for your profile and for the temp one. it's just a matter of renaming that key to fix this problem, I've fixed it probably a dozen times on clients pc's. I can remote into your PC if you'd like and show you.

No thanks. That's the first thing that shows up in Google, but it didn't work. No matter, I just restored everything from backup images I have.

Don't blame windows. It just saved your data. Your user previous user profile is corrupt. Address any HDD or file integrity issues then follow this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947215

Edit: looks like you restored. You should check your HDD (check disk) and do a SFC scan anyhow as profile corruption is a symptom of larger problems.

I have to rectify something. My Windows Vista PC at work doesn'tgive the prompts but my Win7 PC at home does. I'll compare the configurations some day and see if I can get rid of the prompts in Win7. I'll let you know if I have success.
