Logging off and back in did jack shit. Because it's a temporary profile, event viewer looks like it's on a brand new install (empty of error logs). Who the fuck is the system administrator (me)?
Anyone outside of a business who uses auto-update is wasting their time and giving themselves nothing but headaches. This is true for everything from driver updates to official updates from Microshit for OS and Office...stuff breaks and you`re S.O.L. with no recourse.
A life rule for anything computer-related: if you really don`t need the updates, don`t get them.

Good luck keeping your windows secure.
I've used automatic updates for Windows for ages now and never had a single problem.
The fact that random updates roll out every 10 minutes and requires a reboot is about to drive me insane. Especially those goddamn reminders that pop up and minimize anything I have fullscreen aside from games. Maybe if they actually had competent programmers they wouldn't need so many goddamn updates?

No I think GKY is right because this time something weird happened.
I do find it weird that MS puts the MSE updates in the "optional" section, like I don't want virus def. updated.
Meanwhile I just updated itunes and it got fucked on install...websites and others with this problem are saying the fix wiping all itunes info from my computer and reinstalling. I'll just leave it on the old one...

Updates are released on Tuesday's. Maybe you need to properly configure your computer. Mine never minimizes or reboots on its own.
The only good news is that my data is unaffected. It just fucked up the user accounts somehow and I can't find a way of restoring it. I'm currently trying to create a new user account and migrating things over.
Same version here. Finally rebooted. Working fine. My local admin account works, as well as the domain login I normal use that full domain admin rights.

Consider yourself lucky. I installed the Windows updates on my work machine last Wednesday and every reboot fails to log in because, simply, it cannot find a network anymore...and on my work machine this broken login takes roughly 30 minutes of waiting before it tells you there is no network. After finally getting to the desktop I have to manually disable the network and then re-enable it to get it working. Sorry...that is retarded. I only updated my work machine because I had no choice and it took our IT department 2 days to find a fix...which still does not work 100% of the time.
And for further info on my luck with updates, check my comment on the latest nVidia drivers in T&T...they suck.
Why do people think that if you dont update that somehow Johnny Magichack - who is doing absolutely nothing but sitting on his computer waiting for you to not update - will get them the next day?
I posted this on the microsoft forum a few months back
This just happened to me. I walked away from my computer for 30 seconds, and when I come back the computer is rebooting. The word document I had been editing for the last hour lost all changes. Because Word has technically not crashed, it has happily deleted my changes and any auto-recovery information.
SO FRUSTRATING.
When I press the reboot button on my computer in normal circumstances, Word comes up with a prompt asking me if I want to save changes, and DOES NOT continue with the reboot process until I answer this question. This is correct behavior.
Why is it that when windows decides to restart the computer automatically to update, it gets to override the save prompt? If anything, this is the time NOT to override this prompt, because the user, unaware the computer wants to reboot, may have stepped away for a second?
I don't want to install updates manually. I understand the importance of updates being installed automatically. If I don't use auto-update I will never update. I don't mind the nag screen to reboot. It's understandable. But when I am trying to get work done I will postpone the updating. I shouldn't have to risk losing work because of this.

This. It seems like Shaft and I are the only ones who know how to use a computer.

Sometimes 2 updates roll out at the same time which have to install and reboot separate from one another, which means I have to reboot my machine twice. Annoying. And those reminders specifically will bring videos out of fullscreen mode ("minimize" was the wrong word to use) when they pop up. Media Player Classic, YouTube, other browser videos like NOVA's site... And my rig only rebooted on its own (like what happened to Mr. Jeeps) once due to some critical update of some sort; it rebooted as if I had restarted Windows, but never gave me the option to save anything. Very annoying.
Lately I've been getting in the habit of reading the details of the updates to see which ones "may" require a reboot, and just postpone installing those updates until the end of the day before I shut my PC off. Less annoying. My netbook, on the other hand, gets used infrequently. Whenever I turn it on, I'm always greeted to 30-odd updates and spend half an hour just getting it up to date. Most annoying of all!
