70,000 US dollar is a little over 52,000 euros. The average income here in the Netherlands is roughly 34,000 euros.
I'm 29 years old and don't have a terrible income myself (well above average). I can save a bit of money at the end of each month. I own a house, own a car and have a child. But I can tell you that I don't make €52,000 a year.
If you feel that 52,000 euro (or 70,000 USD) is "nothing special", then I think you're pissing off about 80% of the US population pretty badly.

Still, why shouldn't they make that kind of money? There are few professions that have such an impact on a country's future. Investment in education isn't going to lead to short term gains, but it's going to bring a much more capable workforce down the line.

I agree with you right there. Being a teacher is one of the most under-appreciated forms of employment IMO. I was just a bit suprised that people seemed to think that $70K is a really shitty salary, while I would sign up for that kind of pay without a doubt.
