You're right, in a sense. AIDS is really about succumbing to opportunistic infection, so if you remove the virus, T cells should rebound, and you'll be able to fight off infection.
That might not really happen quite so simply, so yeah, curing HIV might not ward off AIDS symptoms. In theory, it should, but I don't really know. There might be symptoms that aren't infections that a healthy immune system can't ward off (e.g. Kaposi's sarcoma or lymphoma).
