Not all that impressed by the clips I saw.
Might argue that you don't see it in all its 'full 3D glory', but still I bet any Pixar movie would give it a run for its money.

I don't know. I've never seen a film in 3D, and I don't know if I want to break myself in on this film. I have mixed feelings about it, cause on one side I find that 3D is just a cheesey gimmik. I guess I could just watch it twice...

I liked UP in 3-D. The glasses are light and I forgot I was wearing them, although I wear glasses daily and put in contacts for the movie. The effect isn't gimmicky like it used to be years ago. They don't wave things over the audience. The movie just happens to be 3-D.

Well, you need to wear the special glasses for the 3D effect. Wearing two pairs is not really practical, so I wore contacts and put on the 3D glasses.

I'm as cynical as the rest of you when it comes to movies but seeing as Avatar is solidly in the pluses on RottenTomatoes, I bought my tickets last night.

Well...after all the hype and the links posted, everyone seems to be saying,"It'll change the way we make and watch movies." I recall people saying the exact same things about the effects for LOTR, The Matrix and a bunch of other films. I've come to the conclusion that no matter how good or bad this film is, it'll forever be defended by mindless fanbois who will squawk loud and long enough for everyone to be convinced one year from now that it's "the best movie evar".

On a more hilarious note, I heard on the Rachel Maddow show that a moronic blogger is complaining that Avatar isn't "right wing" enough and shows a bunch of "liberal ideals". Apparently he's pissed off that the movie doesn't glorify right wing ideals such as greed, war, invasions/occupations and strip mining.

Just got back and I figure i've got a few minutes before bed, so i'll share my thoughts:

The 3D isn't just a gimmick, it is absolutely essential to immersive yourself in the world. The entire planet looks and feels alive - it really is next level stuff. This is not to say that it would work for every film, cos it certainly wouldn't. But the lush forests and all the interesting creatures just work so much better with the 3D and depth of field effects. Saying that, the high-speed action scenes did hurt my eyes after a while, simply because there is so much to absorb and everything hits you so fast.

The CGI is fantastic and used quite tastefully. George Lucas is going to have a wet dream when he sees this.

The story is nice if cliched to the max. The best analogy I can think of at this moment in time is like playing MW2 - horribly linear and on familiar rails from start to finish, but it's a great ride while it lasts. The characters were also familiar (hard assed military commander, nerdy scientists who care for the planet more than people, the protagonist who somehow manages to gain the trust of an entire alien race within minutes etc....) but they worked well.

It may change the way we look at movies, but it certainly doesn't change anything from a narrativre standpoint. But I guess thats not the point... its a really enjoyable, feel-good popcorn movie, which doesn't make you think much, but will keep your brain happy for nearly 3 hours. I liked it.
