I am surprised to read this...There are entire huge university labs dedicated solely to sports and performance science measuring and experimenting on every aspect of a particular sport. With how much money there is in professional sports and how at those levels the athletes perform at levels where it boils down to tiny details often separating winners from losers, its no surprise that science is employed to help achieve optimal results.Eraser wrote:. I don't think "science" is a term that is aptly used when combined with golf or football for that matter either.
But beyond the laboratory, the term 'science of the sport' describes those technicalities and subtleties that the uneducated observer would never recognize. When that person watches a UFC fight, they don't follow the strategies employed by the participants so it looks like nothing more than two guys hitting each other or rolling around on the ground. With golf a person might just see a guy hitting a ball with a club - having no idea about all the details regarding things like adjustments to stance, ball position, grip, swing plane, how much difference there is between a guy who is a 0 handicap and a 4 handicap and a 10 handicap, etc...Those things are the 'science of the sport.' The only sport I can see that has no science behind it is soccer. Just a bunch of guys running around kicking a ball and scoring about 1 goal per hour or so.
