Returned ff13 (pathetic excuse for an rpg let alone a game) for this. Amazing game

I'm a bit stuck at one part in GoW3 - when you are riding along on the big block thing and the minotaurs spawn trying to break the chain. I've not been able to make it all the way past that in 3 tries. It's odd because the rest of the game hasn't been bad at all, boss fights have been very manageable taking only 1 or 2 tries at the most, then this part comes up and for some reason I just suck at it.
I'm playing Uncharted 2 again right now - not a bad way to spend a day where I am too sick to fucking move off of my chair.

Explain?
I've loved it from the start and it just keeps building more awesome on top with every chapter. The paradigm fighting system is genius.

The dialogue was just too hard to read or listen to for me.

I guess you and I have a complete opposite look on how the game should have been I guess, the main part that distrubs me about that game is how linear it is. Every single map except when you get close to the end of the game is a one-way alleyway. The lack of towns, npcs, even getting money after a fight also makes me not want to play it. But the number one reason I took it back is because of how EASY it is. Its basically a rail shooter in 3rd person. You only get to explore at the end of the game but oops! You can't go back to the places you've been to before. The game was pretty much one long movie for me, while I mashed x and let the battle system take over.
The battle system is "new" but I completely dislike it. The fact you can only control one character in battle is sad, almost as sad as if the character you're controlling dies, you lose. Even if the party is alive. Combine that with the fact bosses target you with everything it's just... ridiculous.
The story is great, character voices are great too, the game looks amazing and if it was a movie, i would have probably liked it way more. To sum it up for me this is how the game felt:
-Run in one way hallway
-Fight monster (even that's stretching it because the majority of fights are with people just wearing different suits), Mash X
-Continue down one way hallway.
The game lacks way too many key rpg elements, you don't have to grind at any point in the game to be able to beat it, its an effortless, mindless game, that was probably released like this because fps games are dominating the market. I beat a boss while taking a dump, with the wireless ps3 controller, just hitting X, and walked in to a perfect 5 star battle rating. No Joke.
I can go on with even more things I didn't like about the game but that's pretty much the basics of why i took the game back after beating it. Zero replayability.
Just my opinion though, to each his own.
For the record, I enjoyed 1-6, 7, 8 and 12, 9 and 10 were "alright" except for 9's art style, and X-2 was... yeah.
Also, dont even get me started on the summons, every single one looks pretty much the same, and they all look like they should be in a transformers game.
Yes, I mad
If you're curious to which battle system I think is the best, my choice is Star Ocean 2's for 2d, and Star Ocean 3's for 3d, way more fun.
Edit: Almost forgot to mention this game doesen't even have a world map, unless i'm completely oblivious and I'm just too stupid to find one.

1-6 are 2d games. I don't even see how you can compare them with 9 when they are 8 bit and 16 bit games, I mean how much variety could they possibly have had with character design with tiles? Mabye i'm just using the word art direction wrong, I just didn't like how "chibi" and "cartoony" it looked.
Edit: Forgot to mention one last thing that irked me about 13, is how the characters HP, strength etc is leveled, in the previous games they had for example the board (ff12), where you can choose what you want to level up next. In this game say HP + 100 is next after Strength + 5 or whatever, you HAVE to get the strength first, its just way too linear.

You're not off base at all and I can see where being such a FF fan, this game would piss you off. I've never had anything against FF games but basically missed the party (I've only played bits of 7, 8, 11, 12). As a "movie" game that I can lay back on the couch and casually play I really enjoy it. The 2 man party system I've been stuck in has made the fights much more challenging than just hitting auto-chain over and over. I really like the paradigm/role system but it does get annoying that you can't take control of other members (personally I would prefer them using AI unless I choose to take control). I'm grateful for the lack of grind but it is definitely too easy.
I think it probably boils down to not being able to see over my hard-on for the HD graphics

I completely agree about the casual gamer part. The game is great for it. To be fair the game is worth playing at least once through, just to see how beautiful it is, and how good the voice acting is. Like I said, it's just my opinion and it's probably because i grew up with those games. It's just not a buy because of the replayability imo. Rental would be good. I'm mostly just pissed off about how the battle system is turn based when it could have been so much more (especially on these consoles)

How many hours did it take to complete?

I can't check right now but it has to be at least 35-45 hours, mostly because of the movies, i didn't skip any or anything. I didn't stop at any point in the game to grind, just start to finish right to the end.
Here -

Skip to like 1:40, wouldn't you agree that a battle system like this would be better in a game that's this new? It could have been done so well on the ps3/360. It's non stop action and thinking, and just fun imo

Yeah, theres basically 4 slots for skills + normal attacks
Normal attacks have short range to the enemy + x, and long range to the enemy + x
Hard attacks (Which go through the enemies shield) is the same, except the circle button.
Then on each of the 4 possible buttons (short x, long x, short o, long o) you can put your skills. You hold the button down to use the skills instead of the normal attacks, and you can "chain" the skills, so you use skill 1, then immediately hold a button for the next one and it chains + 175% damage, do a 3rd and its 200%, and it goes up to 300%.
You can't chain forever, as the skills take "fury" off from the gauge at the bottom, there are items you can make in the game that lower fury usage for skills, etc. 100 fury (standing still recharges it so the only way you can have 100 is to stand still) puts a protective barrier around you, which only the "hard attacks" from enemies can break it, if they hit you with a normal attack, a skill which you pick activates, and hits them. Same goes for them, they can get 100 fury and if you use a normal attack it will reflect off of their shield. In which case you need to use a "hard" attack.
There's more to explain but that's the basics of it.
That video was a bad example as the person playing is using the same ones over and over each character has around 17-20 skills by the end of the game, which all level up as you use them more and more (mastery)

I just kept hitting the minotaurs trying to keep them off the chain. Don't forget to use magic when possible. the spartan phalanx one is awesome for clearing things. If you can get the minigame to instakill them go for it.

sure theres an extra dimension, but it was as medieval and more 'fantasy' than 7, 8 or 10.
and correct me if im wrong but didnt all previous FFs also have superdeformeds and the like, even in 8bit :x
