i dunno brisk dude...

Out of the entire Sony range, it isn't exactly the prettiest laptop. FS series is godly IMHO, goes on par with 15" powerbooks, especially business editions with the grey chassis. S3/4 series again, if I needed a portable powerful laptop, the S series is amazing. The A series (yours) and the B series IMHO are a litte bland. And that leaves the T series, which everyone falls in love with just because of the dinky size.

In terms of 17" laptops, yea, it's nice. The only other laptops with this size of screen are the Toshibas really, the G20 Qosmios (which are down to personal preferance, do you want your laptop looking like Kitt from Knight Rider?) and the P30 series, which looks 'tarded too imho.

If you were getting an A series, I would have spent a little longer saving up and getting the XP edition, the screen resolution on that crazy fucker justifies the size of it.

oh, and the dothan (p-m) chip knocks 7 shades of shit out of the P4. Dothan is potentially the most powerful consumer chip available today, besides the fx-55 (if both chips are overclocked this is). I've seen 2.0ghz dothans go upto 2.7ghz and knock the shit out of a stock speed fx-55 (but fx-55 can be overclocked to beat it).

this is a 2.6 dothan in action, lower means better:
Image

Simply put, the up side of the dothan is a concise architecture which isn't long and complicated like the P4's So when doing most tasks, it beats the P4 at lower clock speeds. The downside is it looses during tasks like video encoding due to P4 optimisations in this area.

try reading this:
http://www.gamepc.com/labs/view_content ... mso&page=6

Oh, and all this information is revolving around the basis of using a dothan in a desktop computer, NOT A LAPTOP. I'm possibily buying a dothan in the near future for overclocking and beating down fx-55s

i mean look at this:
http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/2005052 ... m4-10.html

it's only clocked to 2.5, they go much higher, they're a laptop chip designed to run cool... so overclocking them is childs play, just no one have invented decent cooling solutions for them yet so people are a little limited right now.

and THIS is how you overclock the motherfuckers:
http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showth ... t=17415436

£55 buys you a 1.5ghz dothan. Add some cooling and do a bit of work with the numbers and it becomes a 2.7ghz dothan. Next thing you know, you're doing 28 sec superpi.
Image
So in comparison, you have the power of a FX-55 @ 3.0ghz. Not too shabby huh for 55 quid. Oh, and unlike the fx-55, you are running it all on silent cooling, using just air. The Fx-55 requires high end watercooling or refridgiration to keep it running...

I'll certainly give it another try though, as the last time I used the feature was 2 PC generation's ago.

Thanks for the info turb.

Looks wise, I guess everything is relative. I dig the "classic business" style laptops as much as anyone, and i'm a minimalist freak in nature. The fact is though, when you're actually using a laptop, the only thing you're looking at is the screen (and perhaps the keyboard if you can't type properly heh). And in this respect, its the sexiest laptop available. Truly, the X-BLACK screens from sony will give you nerdgasms of the highest calibre.

And yeh, the next model up from mine has an even better rez/screen. But my concern with these crazy-ass resolutions is eye-fatigue after staring at the tiniest type for extended periods :)

Aye, worst case scenario is 5%-8% of battery life overnight :icon31:

it's a portable 23" cinema display dude... that laptop is an invention of the devil I tell you, average man doesn't achieve feats like that!

I'd have it, but I don't think the system as a whole is worth the extra £500.

I also think that 1gb of RAM should come as standard now...

oh what the hell, I use mac laptops anyway and PC desktops :p

but I have decided that I'm upgrading again this month, Pentium M system and sticking my Athlon M into my server.... really shouldn't be bothering as my system is fine performance wise... and I have a mortgage to pay... but fuck it...

Nah, don't be put off by the Pentium M Mhz specs.. its actually equivelant to a P4 2.5/3.0ghz.

My main system is an AMD Athlon 64 3000, 512MB, ATI X800 Pro, 400GB HDD :)

So perhaps a slight exageration on my part, but it still holds its own, especially in the image editing/music production area.

This is what im refering to..

when yes as far as laptops ONLY go, this statement is perfectly fine.. but hes also talking about his desktop in the next sentence..

So in conclusion, hes "right" about laptops..Not Desktops..
As far as Pentium M vs P4, see this article on Toms Hardware. It seems the Pentium M can own the P4 in some cases if used in a proper system.

http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/20050525/index.html

Regardless, a laptop will always lose due to slower graphics and hard drives anyway.

I know, I'm carrying that thing to everywhere now. Weighs nothing and my Airport Wifi card connects to those countless open unprotected networks with ease :)
