Ok been looking this term up recently and am a bit confused.

I listen to an online radio station that specializes in a certain type of music. It's a file that when i load in winamp, connects to a server and streams the music live.

Now the server that is streaming this data is podcasting right?

So what the fuck do ipods have to do with this?

Is it just the ability to record these streaming sessions as an mp3 file, which you can then upload to your ipod and then listen to later at your convenience?

what the FUCK is so special about that?

Poscasting isa buzzword like multimedia, or broadband. It doesn't actually mean anything it's just a vague description of an idea.

As riddla said. MP3 files. Usually linked to in blogs. The people who create podcasts are idiots and the people who listen to them are fewer than anyone will admit.

Shoutcast is streaming audio server software. Statements like 'listening to shoutcast' are just a convenient way of talking about audio streams.

A bit like how 'hoover' is used in place of vacuum.

Podcasting, as said, is just a shitty blogger word used to describe something that's completely inane and shitty.

No, that is not a podcast.

To be more specific, a true podcast is an MP3 periodical delivered (or discovered) via an RSS feed.

TBH I don't hate podcasting itself as much as it seems. I just resent the dumb buzzword use of what is otherwise quite a good idea.

that is streaming audio. podcasts are the recordings of such streams into mp3 for later enjoyment.

so you need software to grab the stream and save it into an mp3 file right?

this software is on your desktop, and after saving the mp3, you have a podcast? And i gather you can download premade mp3's from radio station sites or bloggers?

By support what they mean is that the software that comes with the player is able to take an RSS feed and download the mp3s from it/put them on your player.

RSS feed - really simple syndicate or something - clueless about this really - something to do with delivering information when it gets released - sorta like reuters or something?

and i'm not being dense. I'm trying to understand something properly, and not be a sheep about it.

the word "podcasting" was founded with this idea being implemented initially only to ipods. now this idea is all over the net. it's only a descriptive word for a universal idea. actually has nothing to do with iPods anymore.

Podcasting is just stupid, downloading programs to listen? I heard a few podcasts in winamps media library, people just ranting about stupid crap. Tech news? I'd rather skim it over on a site then listen to some kid whine about it. So no thanks, I'd rather listen to the radio or music shoutcasts.

One thing I don't understand is why it has become so popular, you always hear CNN mentioning blogs & podcasting.

BTW in the newest winamp when you open a shoutcast it opens the browser window wich tells you a bunch of crap the playlist already tells you. Is there anyway to disable it from poping up?

all iPods support "podcasts". two versions ago (5.0), iTunes started supporting podcasts.

How is "multimedia" a buzzword? And exactly how does it not mean anything? Lets see what multi media is:

1. Of or relating to the combined use of several media: a multimedia installation at the art gallery.
2. Computer Science. Of or relating to an application that can combine text, graphics, full-motion video, and sound into an intergrated package.

Now lets check out the word itself. Multi = multiple, Media = a conduit for communication.

Seems pretty spot-on to me. But then again, I'm not an idiot.

you obviously have had a limited look at podcasts. they're just like blogs or any other website. there's bound to be lamers.
