I’m getting a sense you worked on Quake 4? Sorry if I missed it but which aspects of it did you work on?

Heh well that's because up to now the market for learning game design was small. More schools are supporting those programs now and as the need for better skill increases most of the jobs will require some form of college probably.
But for now that's not the case. While it certainly helps if you have a background in education and experience, you can still get in if you have a good virtual portfolio. Make 10 high-quality maps for Quake 4, get your name recognized, and chances are you can catch a level design position somewhere.
